The cinematography is seriously incredible. Top 25 all-time incredible. While the subject of class is not tackled in a wholly original way, it never feels stilted or unentertaining. One of the better non-Bergman efforts in Swedish cinema and definitely a decade ahead of it s time.

The camerawork in this movie (by Göran Strindberg, who also shot a few early Bergman) is phenomenal, very striking techniques. The visuals for almost every scene are dazzling in one way or another. The story and characters are a little more over-the-top than I would have preferred (most notably the ending), but overall I thought the film had some very interesting moments.

A truly virtuoso work. The photography is absolutely incredible - worthy of Orson Welles - and the entire film is a joy to watch for the visuals alone. But it's also a very entertaining and scathing look at class and gender relations that, while melodramatic, also manages to be fairly complex. I can't believe this film was made in 1951.

DVDRip no MakingOff.

Visually, it's striking. Story wise it's complex, but ends a little abruptly after spending so much time of the courtship, back stories and malicious planning. Still, it's a powerful, yet simple, tale of class, control and depression. One of Alf Sjöberg stronger efforts, during a time he was on par with Ingmar Bergman as Sweden's most interesting film maker.
