Spirited, freewheeling dramedy is so engagingly and affectionately performed that you can forgive its shortcomings, including the frustrating picking up and dropping of plot threads, and its ultimate shapelessness, which makes the near 2 hour run time occasionally drag. Nothing we haven't seen before (it's really just a variation on LA CAGE AUX FOLLES at the end of the day, especially during a dinner scene where guests are forced to act "straight") but still a lot of fun.

Bad not just because it looks like a soap-opera, but because it takes off really well, with some good drama between Antonio and Tommaso, and then gives in to bad gags in the second half.

Özpetek returns with an overly Italian family drama that mashes together social critique, soap-operaesqué melodrama and colourful humor, resulting in a dull, uneven film with a few good moments lost in between the bad ones. The cinematographer must've been dizzy after all the whirling.
