Million Dollar Mermaid

It's all a bit formulaic and pat, but the principals are all pretty good and there are a few progressive feminist ideas at play. But it's not until an hour into the picture when you get to the goods: those dazzling Busby Berkeley productions. Kaleidoscopic aquatic fantasies, gorgeous synchronized movement and colors and effects, gloriously spectacular. Not as consistently entertaining as Gold Diggers of 1933, but it's a reasonably fun time-killer with moments of wonderful eye candy.

Aqua queen Esther Williams pays tribute to the original aqua girl Annette Kellerman in a grand MGM Technicolor fluff piece. Which is kind of what you want when Esther does her thing. Good entertainment, and some real fancy water numbers.

It's a biographical picture of Annette Kellerman but almost autobiographical or a coming out of Esther Williams' own skills in the water. My DVD copy doesn't have the greatest technicolor restoration so the it didn't do the gorgeous set pieces and costumes any justice. A very Hollywood ending. Fav scenes: shocking everyone with her one piece; holding her breath underwater and dancing on the poles and then in the giant clam.
