Lenny and Amanda have an adopted son Max who turns out to be brilliant. Lenny becomes obsessed with finding Max's real parents because he believes that they too must be brilliant. When he finds that Linda Ash is Max' real mother, Lenny is disappointed. Linda is a prostitute and porn star. On top of that, she is quite possibly the dumbest person Lenny has ever met. Interwoven is a Greek chorus linking the story with the story of Oedipus. (imdb)

Some decent highs (quite a few funny lines and Allen's visit to Sorvino's apartment) and a handful of flat-out terrible lows (courtesy of a pesky theater troupe).

Light-weight Allen film. Sorvino is quite good but her role is too over the top IMO. The Greek framing is unnecessary.

Allen on semi-shallow auto-pilot, but quite charming nonetheless. Fluff with a funny bone. And yes, Sorvino is annoyingly great: "You wanna know why I liked you right from the start? I'm always attracted to losers".

Obviously very competently made yet sort of annoying and shrill in all its notes, not only Sorvino's voice. She looks very good in this film, though.

Most of the jokes fall flat. In theory, the idea of a Greek Chorus narrating in Woody Allen's syntax is funny, but in execution it just made me cringe. And that's the most clever thing in the movie, sad to say.

An amusing if minor effort from Woody Allen, largely thanks to Mira Sorvino. Plenty of decent laughs and some heart, although there's no chemistry whatsoever between Allen and his onscreen wife Helena Bonham Carter. Also, lol @ a movie about Woody Allen adopting a child. Good thing it's a boy child, or it would have a sexy surprise coming its way

loved this movie, woody allen still has it, combined with an original plot and some good acting it's great. the best part is the tie in to the old greek tragedies, that is truly something to behold.

Probably in my view Allen's least good movie; somehow it seemed very unlikeable and unfunny.

A solid Woody Allen movie. Nothing spectacular, but few things in life truly are.

Sorvino can act but I have no idea why she won an Oscar here. A cartoon voice highlights this isn't real, but I guess that's the goal? Reminding the viewer this is a cartoon makes it possible to laugh at what would be too depressing otherwise? Either way, Allen's jokes now seem stale & I never laughed. The Greek Chorus' incongruity didn't work for me either. But Sorvino is very watchable & the unusual story made me wish Allen had worked on this more: what if conflicts weren't resolved so easily?

Fairly humdrum minor Woody joint. This is not a concept that fits a full movie like a glove, and as a result we get a lot of uninspired clock-eating like Woody confronting a pimp and Michael Rapaport doing epic shtick. Helena Bonham Carter nearly vanishes after the 30-minute mark, which is weird given that this is ostensibly a marriage crisis movie. Cute that Mira Sorvino won an Oscar for basically just a pretty decent comedy performance. The Greek chorus stuff is neat. Good Abraham and Warden!

Feels like Woody's just treading water here, but even when it becomes unquestionably frivolous, Mighty Aphrodite remains an attractively made, swift, lighthearted dessert that transpires as pleasant mid-range Woody. He's best known for this spirit of romantic comedy, having transitioned from broad screwball to more storied and romantic films.

Probably not one of the best of Woody Allen but nonetheless a decently funny movie. The movie has a few memorable lines. The movie is all Mira Sorvino and Woody Allen they have a good on screen chemistry.

one of the best from Woody Allen; the use of the Greek Chorus is brilliant... "Achilles only had an Achilles heel, I have an entire Achilles body" is the quote that describes Woody Allen's whole life...

Mira Sorvino is great in this film, very funny. There is some very funny writing by Woody Allen. Helena Bonham Carter doesn't get to do very much in this movie.

18 Juliol 2011 - Enginy als diàlegs. No gran trascendència.

I loved that Greek chorus. It was so fun. The 1990s were undoubtedly Allen's worst decade, but this is one of his better movies in that decade. That being said, there's not much point seeking this out until you're like 12 or 15 movies deep into Allen's back catalogue.
