Microbe et Gasoil

A cute story about friendship.

Watchable coming-of-age/buddy movie with a modicum of the unique charm and sense of fun Gondry usually injects into his movies, a slightly pedestrian story and not quite enough wacky contraptions. At least there are a few memorable set pieces which lodge in your mind like surrealist paintings. The leads have chemistry but Gondry ought to work more with adult actors. This goes down not as a flop, but as one of the more insignificant entries in his impressive filmography.

What a weird picture Criticker is showing for the movie poster and cover of the video. Picture must have been taken at least a couple years after the movie was made, because the kid looks a lot older in it. A couple of flaws in the movie, but overall cute and fun and worth a watch if you have Amazon Prime.

A silly adventure with great dialogue that is one part precocious, one part fun.

The great things about Microbe et Gasoil [Microbe & Gasoline] (2015) was ridiculously underplayed in favor of trying to make it a more naturalistic drama. Michel Gondry throws odd stuff in there for a short moments of bliss while otherwise sending them on their way in a somewhat underwhelming fashion. With that said, the brilliant parts are great. That wonderful homebuilt car, random retro stuff and the best hair salon there ever was!
