Mermaids

Of a number of coming-of-age stories from the late 80's and early 90's this is one of the solid, less remembered ones. I don't have anything to complain about, but I'd rather watch "My Girl" or "Stand By Me".

Rough story with inexpert voiceover narration, but Cher and Bob Hoskins are cute together.

This quirky family comedy suffers from the fact that there's nothing particularly memorable about it, which is too bad, considering it has some decent performances and some good humor (fav moment: the pumpkin head).

Character-driven drama with poorly written characters.

A cute movie and great roles for Cher, Winona and Ricci. It has more of a vibe than a plot.

/SPOILER ALERT/ I remember really loving this movie as a kid, the cast is great. But I just rewatched it as an adult recently and was shocked...Winona is supposed to be 15? And she is essentially raped by a 26 year old man? But it's ok because she "wanted" it? No one in the movie is disturbed by this? And meanwhile her baby sister almost drowns to death? I feel slightly traumatized. Does Mermaids need to be #canceled? jesus christ, lol

Great film. Acting was good. Slow plot, but a nice story though. Funny and serious at the same time.

I love this film! although I am a fan of films from the late 80's early 90's :)

Cher is effective and Bob Hoskins is great, although I have never been a big fan of Ryder's it is an above average family dramedy.

Could this be what drove Winona Rider over the edge?

The cast tries, but this is remarkably blah. One very serious editing shortfall for a mainstream movie: a closeup of Hoskins lasts much longer than it should, and you can totally see him thinking, "Is it over? Can I drop this stupid grin yet?"

Cher does some acting. It's not all bad.

I love it, it's a classic for me. Cher is amazing!

Seen this once or twice and can't remember a damn thing about it. I think there was a scene with a well in this movie? I dunno why THAT of all things would stand out...::shrugs:: Pretty meh for me apparently.

Thos movie is great. Can't really say anything else about it. Winona does a great job. Christina Ricci is so cute, and Cher is really convincing.

from memory this flick brought us "The shoop shoop song". Just EVIL!!!

I dont remember well, but what I remember that I was a little irritated to watch, spent many times on TV.

My rating would have been a lot lower except that the young Christina Ricci as the little girl who loves to swim is simply adorable. As for Winona Ryder, she believeably plays a selfish spoiled teen brat, and argueably Cher is her selfish spoiled brat mother. Bob Hoskins is not my idea of a hunk. I hate dysfunctional family movies.

A nice coming-of-age movie for girls and women alike. Trust me, it's better than it looks.

Bob Hoskins and a young Winona Ryder, back when you thought she was going to be a special actress, can't save this Cher movie.
