This slow-moving war film--really an anti-war film--has a too-obvious screenplay by blacklisted Ben Maddow, but it is starkly photographed among rocky terrain--a fine backdrop for the tension and fear of war. Anthony Mann's direction is excellent, and the film features many fine performances, among which Robert Ryan, Aldo Ray and Robert Keith--playing a shell-shocked colonel without a line of dialogue--are standouts.

Viewed November 15, 2021. This is perhaps Anthony Mann’s most visually striking film. It opens with an astonishing pan that rises up and over a decimated landscape, where a group of American soldiers lay camouflaged. This sets the film’s tone, its unique portrait of the war zone — A film that seems to take place nowhere, or rather in one infinite and expansive place from which there are no boundaries and no exits.

Unfortunately, "Men in War" is muddled with very little character development and a weak soundtrack.

A well made well acted war film. I haven't seen too many Korean war films but I felt that this was a good one. The "North Koreans" were basically faceless, nameless non characters who played a very minor part in the story. My only issue was the fact that the story really doesn't go anywhere.

Sure, we've all seen a hundred war pictures by now but this was quite refreshing. Very beautifully photographed

Not quite as good as Samuel Fuller's Korean War movies but pretty damn close!

Better than The Steel Helmet.

Though well-shot and great looking like any Anthony Mann film, it was a bit underwhelming, especially compared to, say, Fuller's The Steel Helmet. Mann's film felt a bit schematic. Performances are strong --Aldo Ray especially lends an air of authenticity that is usually missed in Hollywood depictions of war.
