The generally fine performances keep this low-key, simmering coming of ager ticking along, with Valverde especially good in her Lolita-esque characterisation, but it gradually becomes apparent that there is no real nuance or insight into the characters here, as the screenplay veers off into sometimes grubby scenes of not quite sexual exploitation (one could use the Ab Fab defense of “well *she’s* the one holding the whip”). Not particularly explicit, but designed to be uncomfortably titillating.

Most of the time, it's great, but it has some really weird moments and completely falls apart in the last 15 minutes. A missed opportunity.
