A young woman named Taeko arrives at a remote guesthouse in peaceful and beautiful natural surroundings by the sea. Here she is cut off from the outside world, there is no mobile connection, and everything seems set for some relaxing days. But Taeko is baffled by the landlord's curious cooking rituals, by synchronised dancing on the beach, and by the favourite pastime of the natives which is called "twilighting". In small, but very tangible ways, Taeko's limits are being pushed. (Kosmorama.no)

nice bit of gentle, epicurean sort of cinema. Sakura-san sporting major snufkin energy. agree w/lofisofi- it's got some mono no aware going on.

Think of Kore-eda making a comedy--one influenced by the Kaurismaki's deadpan style. The "message" of the film may be pat (modern individuals need to learn how to slow down), but the film is so subtle, charming and delightful that you don't feel like you're being preached at. I loved this movie and I can't wait to see more of Ogigami's films. (psi: 65)

Never really got on its wavelength, but some pretty pictures of the oceanside.

I really like how this movie started...but then it REALLY slowed down. I don't mind a slow movie that takes a lot of effort on the part of the viewer but stills of scenery made me think that the movie was finished about 10 times. What I liked: it had this Kaurasmaki dry humor, where the characters were saying absurdly profound things with no emotion. I liked the counter-positioning of the characters. What I didn't like: it was predictable; of course the main character would come around.

Quite similar in mood to Ogigami's previous film, Kamome Diner, but with even less content. Feels a bit too contrived and quirky, in that typical Japanese indie way. Still, a decent enough way to wind down and relax for a bit.

"Megane is the type of cutesy-quaint foreign import that's just about insufferable." - Nick Schager
