Meet the Fockers
2004
Comedy
1h 55m
Now that Greg Focker (Stiller) is "in" with his soon-to-be in-laws, Jack (De Niro) and Dina (Danner) Byrnes, it looks like smooth sailing for him and his fiancée, Pam (Polo). But that's before Pam's parents meet Greg's parents, Bernie and Roz Focker (Hoffman and Streisand). The hyper-relaxed Fockers and the tightly-wound Byrneses are woefully mismatched from the start, and no matter how hard Greg and Pam try, there is just no bringing their families together-which all adds up to a disastrously funny time of "getting to know you." I'm thinking Robert De Niro must have made some bad investments after Taxi Driver and Raging Bull and Casino and The King of Comedy and Goodfellas and A Bronx Tale and Cape Fear and Brazil and Once Upon a Time in America and The Untouchables and The Deer Hunter and The Godfather Part II because there is no other conceivable reason for him to do this.

A most minimal of plots is saved by the excellent cast, who play off their characters' striking contrasts (to DeNiro's no-fun Jack and Stiller's awkward Greg is added Hoffman's delightfully exuberant Bernie and Streisand's free-spirited Roz) with natural ease and to hilarious results, as the script takes the chaotic tension impressively far (even deep) before the heartwarming payoff (see Jack's "we're family now"). Given the film's length though, the silly son sub-story could have been cut.

Another franchise that should never have happened. Meet the Parents was funny and over-the-top. Great. Now let's not fuck it up. But... they did. Film isn't great, but also not bad. Taken in contrast to the first film, though, not only does this movie blow, but it also smears ass sweat on the first movie, making it uncomfortable to watch. Worst possible way to do a sequel.

That's right, a 2. I would have given it a 1 except I have faith that Hollywood will make another sequal to this stinker of a series. They found the one way to make Meet the Parents even worse, GASP! they added Babs! I hate Babs! I think DeNiro is incredible, normally, but not here. I like Ben Stiller, but not here. Don't waste your tiime on this movie. Don't waste anymore time with this review. Nothing to see here. Move along.

11/9/18 - Watched it again Tuesday. This one was half-good, half not-so-good. It had some decent jokes, like the answering machine, and Mr. Jinx flushing the Fockers' dog down the toilet. I didn't like how Greg is placed into situations that feel (more?) contrived and outlandish this time around (like the truth serum scenes, for instance) so Jack has less reason to trust him. Greg's parents swing between peculiar and plain revolting a bit, which I wasn't a fan of either.

Meet the Fockers is a poor sequel, especially when compared to the surprise that came from Meet the Parents. This one isn't anywhere near as funny, either due to being too busy/unfocused or its filmmakers running out of ideas. Maybe a bit of both. The new characters add very little, there are more embarrassing situations that feel like they're insulting your intelligence, and Robert De Niro's presence was far more lacking this time out. Maybe he realized that it wouldn't be worth trying.

Meet The Fockers is a definite step down from its predecessor but it's still a reasonably enjoyable comedy. The laughs are just as shocking as first time round, but it relies too heavily on innuendo and raunchy jokes. Stiller continues to get himself in comically sticky situations and his chemistry with De Niro still entertains but begins to ware thin. And I loved Hoffman & Streisand here. But at times seeing such iconic actors shaming themselves with weak sex gags is a little disheartening.

Meet the Fockers built upon where the last film left off in a great way. The addition of Gaylord's Sex Therapist mother played by Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman as his overly proud stay at home dad really added a lot to this comedy. Dustin Hoffman has great comedic timing and had me laughing a bunch. I also loved the little side story where Streisand is helping Blythe Danner with her marital problems. Once again Teri Polo is just so fun and cute. Oh yeah and Ben Stiller is in this...

I think that it is physically impossible to do good sequels to romantic comedies. Even though the acting by Dustin Hoffman and Streisand is great and it has some good moment here and there overall it feels very forced. This time they didn't show the cat enough to win me over.

Mistakes - 1) While passing the frat-house bus, in the close-up, as the two girls are about to flash, the reflections of the camera and two crew members moving on the crew's vehicle are visible on the glass window. 2) When Pam and Greg step into the motor coach nothing is on the counter between the sink and stove. However, in the shot facing Dina there are groceries right beside the sink, at the edge of the counter, including a box of Orville Redenbocker's microwave popcorn.

This movie is very disappointing, which is such a shame because the first one is so good. What makes it disappointing? A baby. That's right, the filmmakers decided to throw a screaming baby into a plot that would have otherwise been really enjoyable. It starts out promising, but then the baby comes and just stays there for a majority of the film. And we hardly even get to meet the Fockers. The screentime that could've been spent with them is spent with the baby instead. Bad idea.
