What the hell went on with trick-or-treating in the early 1900s? My favorite scene btw.

I like how in these classic musicals, when a song starts up you can always tell during the opening 2 bars whether or not it's going to be racist.
Also interesting is how the behaviour of the youngest daughter & her friends is considered normal; these days concerned citizens would be sounding the alarm bells.

A Christmas film that is also the origin story of a psychotic young girl becoming Michael Myers. I have Simpsons brain, because the Trolley Song has been stuck in my brain for over 20 years because of the Halloween episode. Speaking of Halloween, we apparently used to let kids roam the streets and start bonfires? Is this a thing that actually happened? That whole scene felt like a different movie.

Apparently back in the day Halloween consisted of wealthy white elementary-aged kids starting bonfires in the street and throwing mysterious white powder into people's faces, and if that's not the most terrifying holiday ever than I don't know what is.

It's hard to pinpoint why this has aged so well for a 1940s musical chick flick, but I really enjoyed it and found the songs catchy. The inescapable conclusion is that Minnelli was a director of superb sensitivity and taste, even while making syrupy crowd-pleasers.

The trick-or-treat section deals in a level of absurdity and hysterics that are both uncomfortable and that don't really gel with the surrounding acts. For the most part, though, the film is a joy. The Trolley Song' is my favourite song here, full of an energy and exuberance that always makes me smile, though Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas', with its melancholy and desperate hope, sticks with me the most.

It's vibrant, colourful, jolly and packed full of Judy Garland, but beneath its positive messages its story is perhaps a little too simplistic. For me, it doesn't come close to the high drama of Gone With The Wind, the exuberance of Singin' in the Rain, or the emotional punch of Wonderful Life - the first few films of a similar era I thought of. Of course, few films do, and it's not to say this isn't decent light entertainment, I just wouldn't rank it alongside other classics of the decade.

It's hard to find more pleasant viewing than this. It just has such an air of sweetness and nostalgia to it; the conflicts are low-stakes and the family members feel like they really care about one another. The musical numbers are not only lovely but are woven directly into the plot and the characters' mindsets. Garland is fantastic and Margaret O'Brien gives the rare kind of child performance that is genuinely funny and cute.

A wonderful nostalgic comedy. No other movie evokes the feel of the early years of the last century like this one. The songs are great,Judy is at her best (which is of course very, very good), and Margaret O'Brien will make you laugh and break your heart in what still may be the best performance given by a child in an American film. (The Halloween and Christmas sequences are detachable delights, and should be viewed--if possible--every holiday season.)

One of the more enjoyable musicals I've seen. I appreciated that the bulk of the songs were actually woven into the narrative, rather than people just randomly breaking into song. Also, this is just a beautifully rendered portrait of turn of the century America. And Minnelli is obviously captivated by Judy Garland--the lengthy shot of her singing Have a Merry Christmas is wonderfully expressive.

Structured around the cycle of the seasons and more particularly punctuated by Halloween and Christmas, this is a simple and rather syrupy piece of engineered Americana that is ultimately about accepting that New York, New York is not a wonderful town. Has its charms and moments, but that it was a massive success does not mean that Garland was wrong to question the quality of the screenplay. Most memorable: the unusual Halloween episode; the ambiguity of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”.

A mixture of a fascination with the "big world", the dazzling industrial and technological explosion, and a deep love for the "little world", the cosmic warmth within a family and between lovers: the spirit of early 20th century (before the Great Depression hit), we might say, woven into a cinematic presentation that, despite its possibly melodramatic and (in today's view) naive tone, is nonetheless beautiful and undoubtedly enjoyable. Wonderful music and great cast, especially Margaret O'Brien.

I usually appreciate classic musicals but this one dragged on with superficial drama. The ending was the best part, but not quite enough to salvage the whole. Songs were passable.

"You and I" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" were undeniably fucking lovely. The rest was pretty shallow. The fact that Tootie was the only character of any interest is all too telling. The boyfriend looked about 12.

Next to Wizard of Oz, this is Judy Garland's best movie. And she's never looked more beautiful - you can tell that her future husband, Victor Minelli, really adored her.

A bit light on songs all told, and I could have listened to Judy Garland sing all night long; Garland is magnetic. Some striking shots throughout, especially in the autumn sequence with Alonzo breaking the moving news to his family. A charming tale is told in due course, but not one that particularly moves me. Tootie steals the show in every scene she's in, making up part of an eclectic, loveable family that reminds me of my days in the play *You Can't Take it With You*.

I sometimes find Judy Garland more than a little off-putting, but this film uses her high-strung nervous energy and powerful voice to great effect. Do trolley go "clang clang"? I really love Margaret O'Brien in this film. She's a pure expression of id. What the hell is happening during the Halloween sequence? "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is possible the greatest completely static musical number on screen. Both Garland and O'Brien have incredible weird energy.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

Apparently Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) is an American classic, but not being American, I wouldn't know anything about that. What I can say is that this Vincente Minnelli/Judy Garland collaboration does warm you up. Gracefully lively and sweet. There's no denying it's charms.

Rewatch. I love this musical. Memorable songs. Judy Garland. Christmas classic but the Halloween scene is significant (if different from the film). Halloween apparently was a lot more terrifying. Pastel colors. Tootie's got issues. Overall nice family movie though all the conflicts seem to be privileged people problems. Fav scenes: "Meet Me in St. Louis;" trolley song; Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas; Tottie destroying snowmen.

Really wonderful. The plot is pure fluff... based on the mildest of dramatic conflicts, if you could even call them conflicts at all. But it is a warm and inviting story. And anyway, you don't watch a musical for the plot, you watch it for the musical sequences. And oh, how joyous and transcendent they are. "The Trolley Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" are glorious, soaring highlights, but there really isn't a stinker in the bunch.

As a fan of musicals I have to say this could have done with some more light and shade and a stronger editor. However Judy Garland is enchanting and there are some great numbers especially 'Have yourself a merry little christmas' - Strong performances from the child actors but 20 minutes too long by today's standards.
