Martin and Mariana live on the same block, in opposite buildings. But they don't manage to meet each other. They cross each other, not knowing about the other's existence. The city brings them together, and, at the same time, brings them apart. (berlinale.de)

Visually there is a lot to like here. I love when films talk about particular cities like this, so the Buenos Aires of it all was delightful. However, it definitely moves at its own pace, and is kinda listless and sparse at times. That however is not entirely unwelcome as it does somewhat feed into its themes of loneliness. For a mostly straightforward and somewhat simplistic movie I ultimately I enjoyed it. The ending is rather cute.

The characters never reached any sort of despair that made you happy for them when they came together. The whole movie was just about two people with completely flat affect wandering through life until they happen to bump into each other. Could have used a bit more despair in their lives to make you truly happy for them when they finally come together in the end.

Taretto's pop film for losers and depressed internet addicts is actually quite good when it tries to say something relevant about the difficult, cold, distant relationship between its characters and the wires, cables and buildings of Buenos Aires. When it blinks at the romantic genre, everything falls apart.

The movie is loaded with interesting visuals and great cinematography, which should be enough for anyone to want to watch it. The fact that is has a pretty neat romantic premise and a very sweet ending even makes it better in my eyes. In essence, it is a fun movie that is generally pretty light, but worth the time.

Nice narrative about Buenos Aires and its buildings and a light story about loneliness, separations and the hungry for love in the modern life.

"Sidewalls" ("Medianeras") is a cute movie that has nothing to do with tires. It's about two young adults living the single life unhappily in urban Buenos Aires. It's well acted and a neat view of a country we might like to romanticize as a vital, sexy paradise.

It's a very slight, but quite engaging film. You never doubt that a film with this light a tone will end with these two meeting, but it's a pleasant journey. Gustavo Taretto telescopes his indebtedness to Woody Allen by having our protagonists both watching the climax of "Manhattan". This film is more like "Annie Hall" with a steady narration by both leads and a blend of many styles ... animation, on screen graphics and many other gimmicks are dropped in.

Silly, but not totally ineffective. I just wish it were less preachy.

The opening is fantastic, as is most of the footage of Buenos Aires, but it's hard to get caught up in a story that seems so self-consciously manufactured. I'm sorry, but I'm not buying that Mariana couldn't find Waldo after all those years. He's right there on the fucking page. The ending, which is also Waldo related, almost made me vomit.

I guess this proves that Argentina can make overly whimsical, cutesy US "indie" style films too. It's kind of like a Tsai Ming-liang movie if it was directed by whoever did 500 Days of Summer. The introduction focusing on Buenos Aires' architecture was easily the best part.

5 points for explication of BA's architecture, especially the supposedly true story of Corina Kavanagh and her 1930s Art Deco masterpiece.
