even though it was chosen as the best european film by FIPRESCI back in 2000, Ceylan's masterpiece is not as well known as Cannes triumphant Distant.

Há 20 anos estreava na Turquia. Meu primeiro Ceylan e me lembrou... Kiarostami. Apesar de ter elementos que gosto no cinema metalinguístico de arte, este filme não me pegou por inteiro, quem sabe não fará mais sentido pra mim quando eu assistir os outros filmes da trilogia provinciana. (Viewed on 26/06/13): Ceylan is not the most original director in cinema, but he generally knows how to use his influences to create films that work on their own terms. C.O.M, however, leans a bit too heavily on the Iranian New Wave stylistically, especially Kiarostami, and it's often derivative to the point of distraction. Ceylan has a more refined visual style than those directors, but it isn't enough to distinguish it. It's a decent film that captures his emerging talent, but that's it.

Ceylan's infusion of slow-paced, low-key realism with a deconstructionist reflection on his own filmmaking process begs comparison to the work of Iranian contemporaries, and Kiarostami especially, and the money talk reminded me of Ray. Yet Clouds of May is distinctively atmospheric and thought-provoking, alluding to man's existential struggle with the slippage of time, and the budding auteur's mastery of still photography is prominent throughout. In fact, it's his best film prior to Climates.

Looks gorgeous (most of the time), the acting seems pretty natural and honest and the themes are quite bittersweet. Still, for some reason it never quite grabbed or moved me as much as I'd hoped.
