Not only was every single character miscast (tv actors, rappers, singers, Nelly Furtado...what ?), but the acting was some of the worst I'd ever seen. Max Payne is one of my favorite games ever, and to see it butchered like that made me scream in agony. Just one film and I'm already awaiting a reboot (Thomas Jane would've been such a great Max Payne IMO). To John Moore: keep your hands off the Metal Gear Solid franchise !!!

I don't know where to start. Awful dialogs, possibly the worst casting that could happen for a movie called "Max Payne", a failed attempt to realize the Norse Mythologic references the game used and a pace that is painfully slow for a movie that based on a game which had "New York Minute". The only good thing that they managed to create was the cold and dark atmosphere.Action was used sparse which was riddicilous. John Moore couldn't even manage to tell a revenge story.

Not quite as bad as most people make it out to be. Wahlberg has exactly the right face for this. They should have made it "more noir", instead of mixing in the supernatural creatures. What truly derails the film - besides the poor, flashback-laden storytelling - is a bad guy so tame that I can only try to hint at how ineffectual and payneful the resolution is with a pun like this.

Now, I like Mark Wahlberg, so I always wish him well. But this is just so very meh it makes Tomb Raider look interesting. It doesn't matter so much about plot in action films, but ye gods make it entertaining yeah? And where did the the super-slow-mo bullet time go?

It's stylish but that's it. The plot and dialog are both quite ridiculous so even a decent cast couldn't do anything with it. However Wahlberg is the only really decent actor in this, Nelly Furtado is HILARIOUSLY bad at acting to the point of almost making the film worth watching. The action scenes are certainly the highlight of the film but sadly you have to slog through over an hour of dribble, poor pacing and editing to get to them and the payoff certainly isn't worth it.

An all-out, chopped up and dumb action popcorn flick with very little interesting scenes. The cast is terrible too, with Wahlberg's chemistry with the rest being just plain bad. Once the gunplay picks up though, it's fairly decent and has awesome bullet time scenes. There's also some great cinematography to be found here racking up extra points. The horrible console to big-screen adaptation streak continues, with another one biting the dust.

I wish anyone involved with this had bothered to watch someone else play the game (I know they wouldn't play it themselves because games aren't real art for movie people). The game has a real film noir detective feel to it and a great script full of dark humour, none of which made it to the film. Instead it's a dull illogical mess that must qualify as one of the most boring, least action-filled action films of the decade.

Still one of the worst VG adaptations. The writers have clearly never played the game and just looked up the synopsis on Wiki. All traces of the noir style are replaced with dull acting, dull visuals and PG-13 CGI violence. Wahlberg sounds less like a man with nothing to lose and more like he's just a bit grumpy. Doesn't even work as a good-bad movie. Give me an Uwe Boll film over this any day. Points for having McCaffrey do a cameo, minus points for not using the incredible original theme.

I've no doubt that if you killed Marky Mark's family he would try to hunt you down & kill you, or at the very least steal your car! I'll give Moore credit for having an eye for a good shot, & managing to provide mild entertainment, but overall this is a mess in every department. My favourite bits were the 'Wahlberg Roar of Anger' after he nearly freezes to death & when two goons give each other a complex set of tactical hand signals, before crashing through a door and spraying bullets randomly!

Max Payne does not hold up well as a film, much less as an adaptation of a game. The film suffers from sloppy acting, poor direction, a bad mix of action and drama as well as a climax that ends up being worse than the rest of the film. It ends up being boring, hard to follow and not interesting in the least. Its artistic style to violence keeps it together for the most part, but it ends up falling flat on its face when it tries anything else.

I'm not surprised they completely fucked up an adaptation of a great video game with tons of cinematic potential. It abandons the game's gritty noir tone for something hyper-realistic, supernatural, and faux-psychological. And who the hell is responsible for casting this movie?

Max Payne might be my favourite video game series of all time. There was no Max Payne in this movie. Where the hell was the first person narration? Where was the moody music? Where was one single fucking moment of self awareness or humour? Also, Max is arrested a the end of Max Payne. I honestly don't know if this happened in the movie, because the police storm the roof and have their guns pointed at him, and then someone says "don't worry, Payne is alive," and then the movie ends. Wha?

Has the unenviable accolade of being the only high budget action flick that I literally couldn't stay awake through. The casting and everything around it is dire. Whalberg is letting his self centered attitude flow into his acting even more than usual. I mean really, it can't be a good thing when O'Donnell stands out as being the only half decent aspect. The only thing to come out of this film involved Wahlberg shamelessly promoting this on Top Gear. "Hi. I'm a total prick. Watch Max Payne."

What has limitless potential in its stylized world, Max Payne is completely dumb, boring, poorly acted, very misdirected, chopped up, and without a cohesive storyline. Wahlberg brings nothing to the table of what earned him his Oscar nod; no fear, menace or believability. The other characters barely exist as well as the revenge/murder storyline, and then they throw in the Iraq war and a steroid drug. "Max Payne" is awful - by the time the gunplay picks up near the end, it's too late.

Really, really bad. Possibly the worst cast film I've seen. I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I don't mind him when he's in bit roles, honestly, but Mark 'The Wahl' Wahlberg is about as fit for a leading role as a sack of potatoes. Mila Kunis I don't mind but she's in a horrible role that reminds all too much of American Psycho 2. And Ludacris? Really? Surprisingly, Chris O'Donnel impressed me. In any case, there's really nothing in this film that justifies it being made.

I have an affinity for video game adaptations, and Wahlberg is a good choice for Payne. For about 20 minutes, it is pretty decent, but then it falls face down to genre cliches. It has a few shining moments where they converted the video game slow-motion violence pretty well to live action, but the rest is forgettable. The vengeance stories are very good as a video game as you appropriate the mission via gameplay, but for a movie, the story needs more bite.

Occupying the netherworld between a grounded, Nolan-ish adventure and a more stylised SIN CITY riff, this is largely good fun, especially if you have a soft spot for the steely blues and grays of action and sci-fi efforts of the noughties; Wahlberg and Kunis are about as effective as the material allows them to be, and Moore keeps the action humming along well enough to help you forget/discard the over-convoluted plotting and the arbitrary nature of at least one character’s “big reveal”.

Contains some nice cinematographhy and sound. Unfortunately most of the characters are throwaways. I'm puzzled as to why the director chose to leave out the mesmerizing original theme music from the game, and also made very little use of the iconic bullet-time action sequences that made Max Payne a seminal work in the 3rd-person-shooter genre. Mark Wahlberg makes the script a lot better than it would have been without him.

I quite enjoy the gorgeous and seductive Olga Kurylenko, but they cut her scenes short before they got really good. Mila Kunis was also pretty. The acting was unconvincing, especially from Mark Wahlberg. Ruined by the idiotic use of nonsensical computer graphic imagery. Horrible editing makes almost every key scene feel disjointed. I don't think I've seen a movie trying to be the film adaption of Sin City more than the film adaption of Sin City. The noir feel was lost on me as Moore overdirects and Wahlberg acts like a tree with a seizure. This movie is trying so hard to be something it will never be; a dark and gritty revenge movie. The plot is jumping all over the place and nothing ends up making any sense. I am actually sort of glad that I never played the game because then I would be more angry than dazed and confused.

Video games are often criticized for their lack of an engaging story, but in this case the source material was much more compelling than the film adaptation. Instead of sticking to the noir/action roots of the game, the film spends way too much time trying to be a mystery/thriller.
