Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.

I've been a fan of M.I.A. for over a decade now, so I was always going to appreciate this documentary in some way. And yeah, I liked it. It really helped that she was an aspiring documentary filmmaker, so there's a lot of invaluable footage from of her younger self. It was interesting to see the backstory behind some songs and albums and her perspective on herself and her fame. It doesn't have much of an overall narrative, but I enjoyed it. Definitely recommended for M.I.A. fans.

not particularly remarkable in execution, but extremely intimate and potent regarding its subject matter. imagine a cross between AMY and THE LOOK OF SILENCE.

"I could act as a Trojan horse that would spew forth hallucinating figures with the power to surprise, to disturb the dreams of the exploiters." -Wilfredo Lam- Less about M.I.A. even than an insight into the Sri Lankan Civil War and the deafening silence of the world towards it.

A sign of an interesting documentary : even if you don't know anything about the person the documentary is about, you get swept by the music, the singer M.I.A and the energy of the picture and the politics. Technically not the most accomplished documentary as it is sourced from home videos and early video experiments of Maya Arulpragasam (aka M.I.A). The central conflict/ drama of the film is her ideals and the music industry/ media clashing together.

37. İstanbul Film Festivali - Rexx.

Not the greatest documentary, but what an amazing artist - and as luck would have it, she wanted to be a documentary filmmaker and filmed every step along the way. While the structure is fairly ordinary, it does make you wanna go and experience culture, experience the world.

An incredibly look into the life of singer M.I.A. Scenes from her musical success are cut inbetween footage of the Sri Lanka civil war her father was a part of. Paints the picture of a strong woman that always did what she thought was right and she therefore clashes with the music industry on a whole.
