An extraordinary look at both the Resurrection and Mary's relation to Jesus, this sure as hell puts Passion of the Christ and The DaVinci Code to shame in how seriously it regards religion, faith, and the history of both. Binoche is excellent in what turns out to be a smaller than expected role, as Whittaker seems to have lead role and contributes a lot of the film's faith-based intensity. To alleviate some of this seriousness is Modine's blow-hard director role that is a lot of fun to watch.

Like many misunderstood films by Ferrara, this is a powerful and intense human statement about life, faith and cinema itself. Masterpice. Best (sort of) biblical/christian film ever made? Yep.

I'll admit that I don't really get it. Or let's be more specific. I understand what happened, and why it happened, and I recognize the several levels of metaphor, but I don't understand why the metaphor is there. The film = The Last Supper? I don't know why. Unexplained explosion at other metaphorical Last Supper with Juliette Binoche? I don't understand why. Forest Whitaker's son is Jesus? I guess I get that one. But I didn't understand the thing with the theater at the end.
