Tragic, funny and magnificent are just some of the words one could put on Marwencol. A documentary about the tragic destiny of Mark Hogencamp, who got attacked by five young brats, but at the same time a fairytale of how he deals with it. The pictures of Marwencol combined with Hogencamps narration could easily do for a whole movie. Loved it...

This is the best kind of documentary, one that finds something or someone uniquely beautiful in a random corner of the world. Mark Hogancamp is inspiring for for the simple reason that in spite of experiencing a trauma so horrific and terrible, he forged ahead with life so vehemently that he created something wonderful. I won't forget his tiny town anytime soon.

Hogancamp is an interesting, talented and sad man. At first you just kind of think the situation is sad (which it is definitely sad, and he was traumatized, among other things). Then you actually start to get involved in the actual art project itself. I found myself being intrigued in the stories he created. A fantastic glimpse into an interesting person, and a great examination of what art and what happens when your "therapy becomes art."

Interesting but whilst anticipating and dealing with many questions leaves much unfinished. Perhaps it's a good thing, the looseness of the film gives you time to think and ask questions but I felt slightly unsatisfied by the end.

I find it hard to review real-life content; especially when it is presented on such a personal level as Marwencol. This film is both story of prejudice and the beauty of life. Intricately and intimately shot, it offers a look into something you rarely shit this way - a view into the most private area of a person; his heart and his feelings. Both are easily masked but Mark is so open and direct that it leaves me speechless at his courage. One of the few movies that had me on the edge of tears.

The document itself is only "good", but the story it's telling is very interesting.

Mark Hogancamp's miniature WWII town truly is "art as therapy". Malmberg takes a decidedly unflashy approach, mostly just allowing Hogancamp to speak for himself. Mark is an instantly likable person, not charming so much as open and relatable. The film's revelations are not presented as earth-shattering shockers, but simply facets of a complete person with his own quiet quirks and nagging demons. An understated but fascinating and often inspirational movie about the artist and the value of art.

The town of Marwencol is enchantingly presented and intoxicating, which makes Mark's struggle even more poignant. One of the best documentaries about art that I'm aware.

What got me most was the fact that Marwencol does come alive, not really in the actual modeling itself, but in the photography of it. Hogancamp seems to me to be both blessed and cursed with the ability to combine the imagination of a child with the artistic competence and weighty emotional canvas of adulthood. If I were rating his photographs alone, easy 100. Unfortunately the documentary was to me... not perfect. Hard to say why, but this is still easily a must-watch.

A very compelling telling of one assault victim's coping with the world. The level of detail is amazing. The story itself is okay but the narration, the filming, and the editing make this a great documentary. Fav scenes: story telling (including the bonus scenes)

Thrilling story about a real endearing character. Hogancamp's photography is genuinely great and I ain't too thrilled about the plans to make a dramatic film out of his life. Great ending, too.

I feel this would be fantastic if it was a short film - 20-30 mins

Filmin sujesi Mark bize cok yakin yasamakta, gidip ziyaret etsem mi diye dusundum, pek aklima yatmadi. Guclu bir film - ve bundan hemen sonra izledigim Catfish'e tema olarak cok cok benziyor.

An amazing documentary about an assault victim who stumbles upon his own therapy, both physical and psychological, wherein he creates a parallel life using 1/6th scale WWII-era dolls.

There is nothing wrong with the documentary in itself, I just found Mark Hogancamp's persona and his 'Team America' world to be a wholly uncomfortable one.

I liked the photographs--particularly the genuine, non-ironic quality of them. I also couldn't help but think of parallels between Hogancamp's relationship to Marwencol and a lot of people's relationship to the internet.

This could have easily turned into either turgid sentimentality or worse portray Mark Hogancamp in a mocking way. Thankfully the documentary is none of these, a poignant and fascinating look at his life and work.

As moment-to-moment fascinating as any movie I've seen in a long, long time. One second it's a gripping, inspiring tale of the triumph and resiliency of the human imagination; the next, it's a portrait of one of the most bizarre men in the history of the universe. Then in the last few minutes, it folds in on itself and completely blows your mind. Further proof that nothing is weirder, or more amazing, than real life. Highly recommended.

Hilarious, then suddenly you realize that you laughed when you probably should have been weeping. A portrait of a man and his work that's very strange and very beautiful

"Malmberg's video imagery, captured by point-and-shoot camerawork, and livened up with big band music from time to time, can't hold a candle to outsider artist Mark Hogancamp's work." - Lauren Wissot
