I have no clue what was going on during most of this movie. It is all over the place. The characters are hard to figure out. The story is too difficult to follow. Jack Black has some funny moments, but I have no clue what is going on with his character or any of the other characters at the conclusion of this movie. End this with a quote from my date, "This is the worst movie I have ever seen in my life" Strong words from the person who primarily wanted to see it.

Only after seeing this movie had I realized how polarizing it was upon release. Aside from Jack Black, this movie showcases some of the cast's best performances and this is one of the most brutally honest films I have ever seen. The characters are all insufferable, yet they're all so compelling. I have come to a certain realization. Baumbach doesn't make films. He makes character studies and this is no exception.

Baumbach is still in shape. It's just that I don't see the light I saw in Kicking and Screaming. Be warned though, it's as depressing as Allen's Interiors.

The whole movie is one awkward inappropriate moment after another. It's actually quite interesting and provides some food for thought, but it gets a bit tiring after a while. The performances are really what makes it work.

Baumbach is such a great writer--that's really his strength. Certain scenes were reminiscent of Bergman in the way these people cut each other down in one sentence. Liked the humor sprinkled throughout, and the ending was appropriate, if not a channel (at least in form) of Darjeeling (I wonder which was written first?). However, I think Baumbach is too keen on dragging us through the muck. I mean really--does every character need to have some dark and dastardly sexual issue?

A truly unashamed portrait of a dysfunctional family, or rather a family that functions on oversharing and preying on each others insecurities. Always refreshing to get a dose of Baumbach's mumble-core style dialogue, even in this thorny, scathing variety.

A well acted and written portrayal of sisterhood that feels very authentic, peppered with some amusing moments (though the humour works better in the dialogue than the physical jokes). Nothing in this small story comes across as a big surprise, with pretty standard twists, though the actors still keep the film fresh. Respect for namedropping REM's Murmur.

Baumbach's best looking film so far. The natural lighting and the muted colors are just perfect. It's almost cliche to talk about really, but it's another Baumbach that spoke to me on a truly emotional level. The way people use relationships, and the emotions involved within, against each other to feel better about themselves. Probably his most depressing film.

May be the most overwhelmingly negative film Noah Baumbach ever made. Set mostly in a scenic Long Island home, it's a bit like his version of a Bergman "chamber film," examining the bitter dissolution of a family in the days leading up to the titular wedding. The characters are all awful people without any redeeming qualities, not even much of the razor-sharp wit that characterized the awful people in Baumbach's previous movies.

The good: the acting was exceptional...especially Jennifer Jason Leigh...the scenarios were very well shot and the story very believable
the bad: it dragged quite a bit and many times I often asked myself "why am I watching this?" Only in the last few seconds did I see why the movie was even made.
Still if you get through the whole movie then it is ultimately satisfying I think. However, it does seem a bit of a chore. Unlike other Noah Baumbach films, comic relief is in limited supply.

A nasty, ugly little film which fails both at the comedy which it is claimed to have and also at the drama as you quickly find out that every character is hating, insulting and pretentious. Occasional glimmers of goodness (mainly the last minute or so) don't make up for this being an entirely miserable film without being the slightest bit emotional - a film that plunges itself deeper and deeper in to loathing without the slightest spark of hope.

It's too bad Baumbach's movie is already shot, edited, and up there on the screen, because after a few rounds with a red pencil, it could really have been something worth watching.

Not nearly as fleshed out as Squid and the Whale. The movie starts off awkwardly as if the audience is thrust into the movie halfway. Due to this the characters seem underdeveloped yet overly complex. The pacing of the movie also seemed awkward as the movie dragged unbearably in places. For the most part the acting was decent with one glaring exception. Claude (Zane Pais) gave a terrible performance and came off extremely annoying. I'm not surpised to find out this was his only movie.

Another subtle and interesting character study from Baumbach, but this one is the most relentlessly bleak of the bunch. Kidman's eponymous character is difficult to take from go to woe. The whole movie perhaps assaults the viewer a little too much, but there is always plenty going on to hold the interest as well.

Nicole Kidman is completely insufferable, as is Jennifer Jason Leigh in the beginning. Normally this would be a bad thing to say about two main characters in a film, but despite Kidman being a manipulative superbitch through the movie she was still an intriguing character. Black does a surprisingly good job, and this film shows that you don't always like the characters to recognize the good acting performances. Not as good as The Squid and the Whale, but it's definitely worth a viewing.

Where Anderson's films can ring a little false, Baumbach is always truthful. This is a movie about horrible, dysfunctional people being cruel to one another, and sometimes it hurts, and sometimes it feels like far too much, but it never feels cheap or forced. it's good is what i'm saying

Noah Baumbach certainly knows how to write characters with complex relationships with one another and isn't afraid of making his characters unsympathetic. Whether that's a good or bad thing I don't know. All I know is there were a lot of moments in this film that left me unsatisfied.

Refreshingly intelligent movie that is nevertheless unpleasant in its crassness and doesn't go as far as it could in showing the oscillations of BPD. It could have been a little less cynical without losing its honesty. Kidman and Leigh are impressive and deserved oscar nominations. Didn't have enough of a plot to be truly great.

Sometimes too relentless in its depiction of personal cruelty, the film is still of this fine new vintage of Baumbach: intelligent discourse laced with inspired, bitter humor and acted with nakedly honest performances. Every line of dialogue is a scar, painful because it is a reminder of old wounds. It's almost a relief when the closing credits finally appear. That may make for tough going, but it's also a central goal of the film.
