I could sit here and listen to Morgan Freeman reciting the telephonebook all day long, that's how much I enjoy his voice (a notion very reminescent of Shawshank I might add...). Plus I'm a sucker for cute chicks, so this maybe scores a bit higher than it should.

Photography is nice and it moves along nicely but this is as LCD as it gets as far as "serious" nature documentaries. (By serious I mean anything that isn't specifically aimed at children or pets)

An engaging emotional rollercoaster, following the arduous trials of the majestic emperor penguins. Few things in this world are more endearing than fat, puffy baby penguins. And few things are more soul-crushing than frozen, dead baby penguins. I'm getting a little tired of Morgan Freeman's wise old narrator schtick, but I have to admit he's very good at it.

Enjoyable and fun documentary to watch but from start to finish I found the tone to be too melodramatic to really get into. I know that's probably what the average movie goer wants but it didn't sit all that well for me. Still Morgan Freeman has an excellent voice and I was more than happy to listen to him tell me about the onscreen penguins for over an hour.

If I were a penguin, what would I be doing right now? Why, watching myself on the big screen, that's what. "See, Mom," I'd be saying, "I told you I'd be a star some day!" (pluggedin.com)

Beautiful photography, awwwsome penguins and a sneaking (and rather ruinous) suspicion that the attempt to anthropomorphize them (and fake a narrative) might leave little room for reality.

Over-dramatized and very little actual info on the subject. I hated the way they put all these human emotions into a flock of birds. Attenbourough does it much better.

Well, my heart went out to these supposedly funny looking wads of yingyang dying tubs. That's hardship, yes that's being an animal. That's the weakest link. This movie touched me and not in an uncle way, not in an altar boy way, just in a panging bloody ice pick to the heart way. You're problems seem insignificant. You were wrong weren't you! You thought they had fun and just waddled like little jellies all the time. You were wong d**khead. You'd hate to be a mother effing penguin!

Charming if somewhat insubstantial film has been since overshadowed by various Attenborough-related docuseries, but the intimate footage captured of the penguins and the interesting "march" depicted is by turns fascinating, amusing and even poignant at times. Held together by Freeman's warm and engaging narration.

this is an okay documentary but don't expect it to make you feel good about the world. there's a bit of a fixation on the amount of death in a penguin's life cycle and felt like a bait and switch, much like the version for younger humans, happy feet.

THAT was it? Welcome to one of the most over-hyped movies of all time. Yes, it was definitely an incredible journey, and I have to give props to the filmmakers for capturing such a film under such harsh conditions. However, in the end, this is nothing more than a very well-photographed Animal Planet special. What exactly was the big deal?

A decent nature documentary about the communical and collective behavior and conduct of Antarctic penguins, while also exploring the precarious and perilous temperatures and environments of the terrain. It also has incandescently refulgent photography and shots of the circumstancial domain itself. All the footage is also accompanied by the soothing voice of Morgan Freeman. A great film overall with its only flaw being the slow pace that kind of drags down the movie with it.

About as great a nature documentary as you'll ever see. Penguin behaviour is surprisingly fascinating stuff, and the movie is full of indelible images of the harsh Antarctic terrain. While this sort of thing could get a little boring after a while (and it does, at times), the film finds a saving grace in the richness and warmth of Morgan Freeman's voice. I could listen to that man speak for hours about anything.

A film of combinations. The most irritating combination of a documentary and a reallife child movie, a combination of funny and wannabe funny, but also a good combination of the movie and the music, which superbly fitted with all the rest. I expected much more of this one. Interesting, but irritating.

I was lucky enough to see the original French language version and, though the shots of Antarctica are gorgeous, I found the dubbed dialogue "spoken" by the penguins to be patronizing and insipid. It ruined the film for me, but I'm sure I'll be back to change my rating when I see the English language version which apparently features much more straightforward narration.
