Mandrake, the Magician

1939
Action, Adventure
Columbia's 7th serial (between Flying G-Men and Overland With Kit Carson)was based on the King Features newspaper comic strip created by Lee Falk and Phil Davis, Mandrake the Magician, the world's foremost exponent of mind over matter, although most of us who read the strip over the years were never really certain whether Mandrake was really a magician, or just had even more ability to cloud men's minds than the Shadow. One of the weakest serials of '39. While I don't expect anything too deep from this kind of action series, this plot seemed just too generic to work. They just attached any random character in the lead without really incorporating the true personality of the man. Here they have licensed the Mandrake, the Magician trademark and placed him in a clearly pre-written standard. Plus without the campy coolness this becomes rather dull. The only thing half-cool was the costume of the mysterious Wasp.
