So bland. Carey accurately mimics highlights of Kaufman's public life, but there is no further depth. The film explores nothing and so becomes mere mimicry in the format of a very conventional biopic. The unconventional subject provided an opportunity for playing with unconventional structure - why did they not take that opportunity?

Any attempt at portraying Andy Kaufman was always bound to turn into a gag-reel representing his greatest scams. But when the movie itself starts taking creative freedom with certain events, the already elusive Kaufman seems too out of reach to care about. A shame, because he was one of American comedy's greatest mavericks.

Man on the Moon feels like nothing more than a recreation of everything already known about this divisive comedic talent. Despite the intimacy of the camera, I suspect we feel no closer to Kaufman than his live audiences did, and I think the director felt the same way. The fact that we can't tell if Carrey's brilliant performance is a mere act of mimicry or a true insight into Kaufman's character tells us how shallow this film ventures into this mysterious man's life.

Man On The Moon is a thoughtful and respectful biography, made primarily thanks to the excellent and surprisingly subtle portrayal of Kaufman by Carrey. As the film quickly develops a rappour with the viewer, what at first appears as simple excentricities all become clear and you feel sympathy for the often understood character trying entertain onlookers that annoyingly skim across the surface of a deeper individual. Judging by the performance, it seems to be something quite close to Carrey.

Commendable attempt at introducing modern audiences to Kaufman, but since I didn't really appreciate Kaufman's style of humour I often felt like I wanted to knee Carrey in the junk. Still, a decent biopic.

Many people point to the backstage antics of this film as proof that Jim Carrey is a major POS, but if going method to the point of alienating almost all of Hollywood for a decade results in one of the greatest acting performances ever put to screen, I say it's more than worth it.

I have no way of knowing how close this film is to the real story of Andy Kaufman, but it paints a chilling portrait of an incorrigible asshole who was so addicted to messing with people that he wasted his life on it instead of making any genuine human connections. Disturbing.

A too-reverent, frequently obnoxious, and overly formulaic biopic of a mostly inscrutable figure that attempts to explain away the mystery with shallow dramatics. Carrey's imitation is admirable but predictably over-animated at times. The real problem is that the movie is shackled to Kaufman's cult of personality, especially given the close involvement of so many of his real life friends. You can only see him portrayed as a misunderstood genius so much before it gets insufferable.

I had to pause midway to read about Andy Kaufman and learn that he was a real person in order to enjoy this film, and it became rather enjoyable, mind you. Jim Carrey nails the part, but the movie wades rather superficially across some of the most important aspects of Kaufmans story. I don't like the way he is portrayed as an asshole, but apparently the whole world saw him as one up until his death, so I'll let that aspect pass.

If you close your eyes, you'd swear it is really Andy Kaufman, as Carrey nails it. But that being said, the film is pretty uneven in its depiction of Kaufman's strange life and career. At times the film seems monotonous and plodding. Watching Kaufman be a total prick for close to two hours is like re-visiting his somewhat excruciating comedy bits. He had his moments of brilliance, but for the most part, was overrated in my eyes.

Slow in parts but still an awesome look at Andy Kaufman's work even if it doesn't delve a whole lot behind the scenes and probably embellishes some aspects and glosses over others (the SNL vote). Don't see this movie. It's not about Neil Armstrong, the Apollo mission, or the song by REM written about the Apollo mission. It's about some guy I've never heard of and has nothing to do with astronomy. Ironically, Apollo 13, a spin-off about Rocky's first opponent, had more to do with the lunar program than this.

Forman's "biopic" on the late Andy Kaufman is little more than an anthology of Greatest Bits: the Mighty Mouse lip-sync on Saturday Night Live, the Vegas lounge singer "Tony Clifton," the Intergender Wrestling Champ, etc. (And hence the complete absence of the entertainer's big-screen career: _Heartbeeps_, _In God We Trust_.) Carrey does his utmost to look and sound like the genuine article. But although he can link his eyebrows, he cannot chip away his jutting brow and chin.

Jim Carrey did a superb job of portraying the comedically brilliant Andy Kaufman. The story of Kaufman's life, and tragically early death from lung cancer, is well-presented, taking those of us in the audience along with comedian to the heights of hilarity and the depths of despair. I was mostly interested in watching this because I know that Jim Carrey went really deep into his role. And it shows, as his acting is amazing and he really becomes so many different people that are all Andy Kaufman... or not. That Elvis impersonation was certainly one of my favorite parts and then you kind of had to get into Andy's weird humor. Tony Clifton went from unfunny character to one of the best ones and that was some kind of weird Andy Kaufman/Jim Carrey power.

A very enjoyable film that could have been made by another Kaufman. It's like a what's what of textbook postmodernist cinema, but seen through the Andy Kaufman lens is entirely appropriate, and tasteful when it could easily have been otherwise. Funny, with a broad emotional range and a breadth of vision that comes together pretty seamlessly.

I must confess, I watched Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond before watching the film itself and I went into it aware of how much drama went on behind the scenes for this performance. Carrey’s portrayal of Kaufman is…serviceable but not as accurate as I think Carrey could have made it if his ego had permitted it. Everything was over exaggerated and made Kaufman look way more of a dick than he really was. This aside, I did enjoy the film.

True to the spirit of the man, Man on the Moon is quirky and strange and it's hard to know exactly what response is expected from you at times, being equal parts funny and tragic. Carrey is excellent; distinctly him and yet not him at all. It's a role he was born to play, and which nearly swallowed him. Liberties are taken, but the film is upfront about that, with a witty confession in the form of a Kaufman stand-up routine. There's a lot of understated detail here. Practically perfect.

M.O.T.M is an effective, if sanitized, biopic of Andy Kaufman, a controversial 'comedian' who continues to be a divisive figure even decades after his untimely death. Carrey is very good as Kaufman, capturing both his innovative impatience and his mischievous charm, although it's a portrayal that waters down the more unpleasant aspects of his personality for mass appeal. The best scenes come early, as Kaufman comes into his own, but the final act tries too hard to make him warm and cuddly.

Re-watch actual footage of him on youtube. I don't find him to be the maniacal anti-joke super genius this movie portrays him as. He's about as funny as Ashton Kutcher. As far as Carrey's performance goes, he plays a better Andy Kaufman than Andy Kaufman.
