It's a dark fantasy, not a horror. Very dark fantasy, like if Disney went completely mental and tried to show Tim Burton what dark meant. Clever idea, well executed, truly creepy at times and a very tense last 15 mins

Del Toro puts his name on too many soso films lately. Before any tension can build up, there's always a moment to make you jump a little and then it's gone. The first third of the film I thought I should give it some time, the second that maybe the last part will make up for the mediocre middle that didn't come up with anything new. And in the end, seeing that creature that's plain ugly but not scary makes you wonder why they bothered to show it in the first place. Shame.

Finally, a horror movie that thrives off of story-telling. Where Don't Be Afraid of the Dark couldn't quite find the balance between story telling and horror, this one did, and succeeded with flying colors. Very enjoyable.

Mama has a pretty good beginning and develops a strong psychological thrill, only to throw it all away by making it a generic ghost flick, that's not as scary or touching as it wants to be. It's not horrible, due to some good camera work, good adult leads, and a strong start, but Mama could have been much better if it didn't stick to the typical horror script.

Not a bad thriller from the Del toro camp. Unfortunately pg 13, so dont expect too much of anything ( eg gore, scares etc) but if you can get over the half decent CG than the movie is overall enjoyable, with a half memorable ending. kudos to the king slayer, every movie he gets im rooting for! And man, chastain looks HAWT! as a rocker chick! No wonder she is one of the few actresses of all time to get a number one and two movie at the same time at the box office!

Probably one of the more creepy films I've seen in a while. The mood that was set for this movie was perfect. I thought the creature design was amazing. I felt my pulse quicken every time Mama was near. I could definitely see Mama collectible dolls in the future for horror fans. The music was also especially good. Chastain was amazing as usual although I wasn't a fan of her losing her nice red hair. The older daughter also did a great job especially when she was looking off camera at EVIL!

Jessica is the best bassist of all time -- prettier than Kim and lovelier than Tina. The rest? Well, Muschietti seems comfortable -- maybe too comfortable -- with Del Toro's creative imagery about scary family environments and often forgets to build the mom-vs-mom inner tensions involved. There is a good premise -- an evil mother that provides love and life --, but no good execution -- that amount of crackling for this fairy tale finale, with a demon and a girl turning into butterflies? Really?

It lost some of its creepiness of the 3 minute short by needing to add context as a feature length; and instead they rely heavily on jump scares, which is a cheap tactic. However, there is still some general creepiness from the child actors and the story behind it. Not the worst horror film I've seen, though the ending is particularly awful.

Mama bears two redeemable factors. The first was thinking, "Hey! Jaime Lannister!" and the second was the creature design. Other than that, there is literally nothing else to recommend. It was pretty bad. If it weren't for the acting chops of Jessica Chastain and those two girls (incredibly talented for child actresses), I'd have even come away thinking it was downright terrible. What little goodwill it builds up with some moody sets and skillful cinematography, it immediately ruins with cheap jump scares and some atrocious writing. And that ending just left me emotionally confused.

This film didn't leave much of an impression. It's not the worst film you'll see, and there are great elements to this, but at the end of it all, it fails to "wow" you. The performances are good, and it's the main thing that keeps this film engaging. It just feels a little like they tried to juggle one too many concepts and ended up reverting to a fairly typical horror trope, that is neither scary nor innovative.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people judge movies to be the bottom of the barrel, as far as horror movies go, you have a long way to fall to reach the bottom and this isn't there. Sure, it's not good, it was downright disappointing, but I've seen far worse and the ending really wasn't that bad. Mama's a cool looking ghost and the unhappy ending was nice. But that's about it. They didn't really think through this 'filthy feral children raised by caring human ghost, who move CGI style in the beginning and then not at all anymore' theme, I'm afraid. Billed as a standard horror film, it definitely starts out with the standard tropes and cliches of modern horror. An undefined line between science and the supernatural, before learning it's all real and terrifying.
However, it takes a turn and I think the film works better in the definition of Dark Fantasy.
The backstory of the ghost and the bittersweet ending make it more akin to Pan's Labyrinth than The Grudge.

Watching this movie was a mistake. I remembered all the reasons that made me stop watching horror movies. One of the reasons was that all the new horror movies that come out are no "horror" movies at all. Another reason was that they always remind me of something that I have watched before and I liked it more than the movie I spent money and time to watch - I was a cinema goer at that time.
Guillermo del Toro can do better than that, I'm sure of it.

Another horror film that is really a ghost story, and pretty much of the most stereotypical variety. As this becomes clearer it equally becomes clear that the ghost, while homicidal toward relatively minor characters, won't be killing any of the parental equivalents, and will end up as close to redeemed as ghosts tend to get. Even redemption requiring the theft/murder of a child is rendered as 'touching', the sole interesting fact, though not deliberately so, I think. Increasingly awful.

Unfortunately not long enough; the director can't decide if he wants to go for psychological dread or lots of jump scares and an overused CGI monster, and tries to do both. I watched this on a plane so most of the atmospheric mood was probably lost on me via the dinky screen and headset. But I've seen enough psychological/supernatural horror to know that you don't get far on mood alone. Story-wise the film didn't seem too inventive. Plenty of mother figures have been harrassed by their freaky possessed children before now. Jessica Chastain showed another side to her talents, but the director showed mainly that he has a knack for imitating established techniques.

In a scene some fifteen minutes into Mama, the new horror movie presented by Guillermo Del Toro and directed by Andy Muschietti, two men (as it happens, by sheer luck) find a roughed out hut in the woods. It is the kind one would instantly associate with the Evil Dead - a mess of grime, cracked windows, rusty appliances with a pile of cherry pits and two critters who scuttle away in the shadows with the liveliness of a half-scared, yet predatory spiders.

The jump scares aren't too overdone since they are connected to some great tension.

Jessica Chastain's boobs. And Jessica Chastain's butt. And Guillermo Del Toro still hasn't made anything good ever. The little girls are amazing though, especially when they eat a bunch of dead moths.

Decent scares with a weak and yet overly convoluted story. Points off for how the man was completely useless the whole time.

Uneven storytelling, with the first and final acts more of a dark fairy tale, with emphasis on character, theme and atmosphere. Meanwhile the middle act is a typical ghost story, overly reliant on jump scares and easily the weakest segment. However, I absolutely loved the creature design - both in sound and visual style. The feral children are definitely unsettling as well. The story was nothing great, but worked well enough when it took on the more fairytale-esque tone.

Guess I don't watch too many horror movies. I thought it was alright. You guys didn't, obviously.

I'm sure I liked the underlying idea, and the kids did a really good job, but the key rule I stick to with (non-slasher) horror is that you keep the monster hidden, which this film broke.

Very predictable both with its story and its attempts to scare, yet the overall product is very well made and it builds to some really creepy climactic scenes. The direction, set design, cinematography and acting is all solid and make up for the flawed storytelling.
