This isn't bad, but often felt a bit disjointed and for a movie like this, I kind of had some difficulty following everything that was going on sometimes. It was funny to see a sing along to the bouncing ball movie this early--I didn't know that convention existed at this point. Not bad but forgettable. The version I watched didn't have the best audio/video, so that could have hurt it for me a bit too.

If you are a fan of classic Chinese music then this has a lot of music for you. However, even if you are not a fan of the music the movie still has a lot to offer. The sweet romantic comedy really works and the drama scenes also work well. Unfortunately, the comedy and the tragedy don't really work that well together and they tend to take away from the strengths of the other.

The mix of comedy, drama and musical is a bit off for my tastes, but the story is good and I enjoyed it as a romance with some commentary on Chinese society of the time.

A Chinese 'sing along to the bouncing ball' movie! Definitely have it's fascinating elements, but for me it became a heavy mixed bag. A movie which didn't exactly know what it was supposed to be. There was tons of songs. There was cute comedy. And there was great tragedy. And blend it together you don't know what to feel. Very Asian with their sense of life in the gutter. It'll make an impression.

I was wondering why this looked familiar... it's one of the films they watched in Electric Shadows. It's a look at the poverty class of Shanghai, but is done in a light-hearted comic style (until the somber ending, that is). Nothing here was really stunning, but the characters were charming, there were a couple of unusual wipes, and some pretty good songs. The DVD quality is awful, obviously no effort at restoration has been made.
