Malone

Inoffensive revenge type story, especially if exciting action offends you. I grew up with Nowhere to Run as the de facto version of this storyline. Burt is a better actor than JCVD but I can't imagine him doing the splits, so...

Decent, but slow Reynolds vehicle. He still oozed manliness in '87, but I think he lost a little bit of the panty melting phenomenon that he had in the the 70's and early 80's.

Dopey contemporary western - Burt Reynolds said it was basically a remake of Shane - similar to Taffin with Pierce Brosnan which was released the same year. Malone isn't too horrible for 80s schlock but it's a notch or 2 below comparable Stallone or Schwarzenegger fare. The idea of a white nationalist group harassing a bunch of white folk in eastern Oregon is pretty funny. Too bad Malone didn't break down outside of Rajneeshpuram - that would have been epic.

It's bizarre that a subdued Burt Reynolds film from 1987 actually plays with some resonance in 2021. That's bad. As a film, this isn't bad but it certainly isn't riveting. Reynolds is tight lipped and stoic but still woos the townsfolk around him. And what a final shot. Camp baby.

A bit too dull and silly to take seriously. Might have started off as a First Blood-flavoured ronin caper, but it doesn't manage to deliver on whatever promise it might have had. Performances are decent, although Reynolds seems curiously lacking his usual charisma here. Passed the time, but that was about it.
