Starts out like a fairly generic murder mystery before it hits the final act and goes full-on Evil Dead. This movie eventually reached a point where it fully embraced camp and I was all for it. We don’t get enough of that in the horror genre anymore. I thought it was beautifully filmed and I loved Annabelle Wallis. It’s not a masterclass horror movie that’s meant to be taken so seriously and it isn’t trying to be by the end. People should lighten up. I had fun.

Just James Wan saying fuck you all I’m making a movie FOR ME after creating so many horror franchises and helping out with other Hollywood stuff he got to make this amazing work of brutality. His weird like matrix-nu metal touches(the clothing but also the attic and use of VHS tapes) melding perfectly in with his whole dolly wide angle stuff(any climbing stair shot) hes mastered now. A hideous movie in the best way. Great action sequences as well. Seattle underground sequence is breathtaking

There are so many filmmakers out there with ideas, with visions, with... hell, basic competence, struggling to get funding. And yet THIS gets made?!? I've seen better dialogue and acting in movies shot by 12-year-olds on their dad's iPhone, yet the big budget only goes to show Wan's complete tonedeafness in 8K resolution. Yes, the finale does occasionally hit the "fun" part of dumb, but even then it's like watching Stab 5 when you were promised Scream.

Hmmm well like others here have said the final act is pretty wild in its embrace of camp and Matrix shit, but I ultimately just found the journey there too tedious. A plot straight out of an 80's b-horror movie. "Malignant" starts out pretty hum-drum and every twist gets a little bit more bat shit crazy than the last. I had a great time with this one. The goal here is not to scare the audience, but to entertain, and Wan pulled out all the stops here. He'll likely go down as a seminal horror director, one of the most important ones of this century.

A standout example of terrible tone management. The acting is pretty bad, plot holes aplenty, really too little plot overall to justify the run time. I love the Pixies, but that theme music doesn't work. The outright bonkers ending put this thing squarely in the "camp" category. I think. The tone of the movie won't let me decide. There is a bitchin' germ of a concept here, but I expect so much more from Wan.

By far the most unique mainstream horror film I’ve seen in a long time. I fully understand why this is so polarizing. The trailer is cut to look like another Conjuring film, and while it does start that way, it morphs into something completely insane, very much pulling a From Dusk Till Dawn. The best way I can describe the last act, is an over the top gory horror version of The Matrix. If that interests you, then check it out. It goes without saying Wan’s directing is still top tier.

See natebarrios review for same feeling. The characters are too unlikeable (non existant) to care when the fabulously nutty 3rd act begins. that last 20 minutes is something to see but it's PAINFUL getting there. If Wan is attempting camp, add him to the list of directors with a budget who can't seem to replicate that magic.(SPOILER) Although that last moment in the mind prison did give off an excellent Garth Marenghi's Darkplace energy. Wish the whole movie was on that level.

Whether you get on board the strange, campy, Giallo-like tone of the film will affect how much you get into it, as well as looking past some iffy writing and nonsensical stuff. The acting seems to be going for cheese and its soundtrack is weird. That being said, there were quite a lot of typical Horror cliches and the movie is never really scary. There’s some good body horror stuff and kills here and there, but the story didn’t really suck me in that much. In the end, I wasn’t a fan.

I was promised this gets crazy in the last twenty minutes, and hoo boy did this ever deliver on the crazy. Unfortunately, you have to sit through almost an hour and a half of mostly tedium before getting there. So: electrifyingly insane, but also very messy. Makes me want to see something that can keep the crazy tone going for the entire runtime.

Japanese-style horror apparently involves random events that gradually coalesce in this Stephen King style plot about a shadow twin. Once it picks up momentum, this film makes for a good engrossing yarn, although until things start to make sense it comes across as cheap, trashy, and disorganized.

Hard to know how much of the bad stuff is intentional. Some of the writing is bad bad, not fun bad, and some of the acting is crap. I was actually invested in the first hour and a half for the most part, but it did take a little bit longer than necessary to get to where it needed to. And then of course the twist and the flip to an action movie was a lot of fun. Great choreography due to the nature of Gabriel/Madison. Also a very visually interesting film. But I still loved it.

The mystery of the plot and characters kept me pretty invested, and I thought Wallis did a great job as a leading lady. All of the effects and directing were pretty signature of Wan, up until the final 20 minutes I mean. This movie is insane and the twist, though strange, was very original and entertaining. I in no way saw It coming, but once It came I could not stop watching. I've definitely never seen another movie like this. I loved the ridiculousness, and give 7 double-sided heads out of 10.

Really won me over in the last 30 minutes, there was no need for the first hour-20-ish to be so much worse though. It's like a cosplay of a horror movie rather than an actual horror movie for much of the runtime; everything is so phony and artificial. I am not a big fan of the dark house, jump scares & murder genre in the modern American style, but maybe I am of its Italian counterpart. Which is where we get to Argento, who was a punk madman and idiosyncratic stylist. His giallos were both camp and externalized subconsciousness - too outrageous to be taken seriously yet too gruesome to be treated unwarily. Well, this is a film in that tradition and, if nothing else, it will wake you up.

James Wan preferred giallo and body horror genres, tried something new and I think he succeeded. Malignant is aesthetically pleasing and very entertaining. I like Wan as a director but this is really bad. This movie is all about the twist and for some it will make their experience. For me, the twist was completely telegraphed making me figure it out after about 20 mins (spoilers prevent me explaining how) which meant I had to sit through the next painfully dull uninteresting hour waiting for the movie to catch up. When the reveal happens, the movie finally goes full nuts and might have been a little fun if I hadn't been utterly numb by that point.

James Wan seems to have failed to grasp a crucial element of camp: it must be sincere. The first and second acts, being a tedious pastiche of horror movies, entirely lack this sincerity, making the movie a slog to get to what is an authentically camp, fantastically inventive and cheeky third act. The setup is so bad, I don't feel the payoff is worth it, especially since the action isn't particularly well shot. But it is better than most of Wan's other horrors. Maybe just watch the third act.

I wasn't sure what I was in for after the super cheesy opening sequence, but I'll give the movie credit for committing to going fully unhinged, even if it takes a while to get there. The writing and acting seem almost intentionally bad at times, and the revelation of the real plot is absolutely ridiculous, but if you don't expect an amazing horror movie, and instead set your expectations to a wild campy ride that eventually goes off the rails, you'll probably enjoy it more.

A Hollywood producer offered James Wan $40M to write and direct a film pitched to him by "a new young talent". Unbeknownst to Wan, the new talent was the producer's secret 10-year-old son, who was told that, in exchange for convincing his mother not to go public with claims that she was 15 when she gave birth, his dad would buy him anything he wanted. Not too much of giallo, but everything else is here: splatter, evil twin, body horror, imaginary friend, haunted house bits, possession hints, mad science stuff, evil doc shit, genetics going full mayhem, police procedural, even some time for comic bits here and there, family melodrama, childhood trauma, all painted in stormy, pale and saturated blue and red Seattle. I feel very conflicted with this. Malignant is a pretty interesting concept, and Wan’s visual talent is at the forefront of this. Unfortunately, this feels like it devolves into a identity crisis. On one hand, it has a solid story, containing some genuinely disturbing imagery and it’s got it’s fair share of gore to go along. However, it’s very interesting twist feels out of place for what this becomes by the final act. It feels stuck doing too much sadly. It’s so hard to rate this.
