Satire about a grifting "holy man" and the sway he holds over the gullible, and...hm...surely there's a parable for modern times here? For Ray, the tone is almost slapstick, with a lot of jokes bordering on the silly. At just over an hour, an easily-digested bonbon.

Playful and irreverent little satire. I hope to some day see this under better circumstances, because I watched a beat up print with subtitles translated by someone with a rough grasp of English.

strange little intellectual comedy from satyajit ray, taking the piss out of religious and romantic idiocy. it didn't really work for me, the tone being rather irritating, but it certainly wasn't uninteresting.

One of the lesser works in Ray's oeuvre, a simple satire. Religious charlatans might have been bold subject matter in 1965 India, I'm not sure. I got really confused at the climax and didn't understand how their plan worked. The movie is amusing but not terribly so. The final scene evoked a chuckle, but overall The Chess Players is funnier.
