Unusual biopic of a romantic poet, but it assumes prior knowledge of Mácha. It isn't clear what his significance to Czech culture is because it isn't directly addressed, and the episodic structure, which alternates between his struggles for recognition and events from his personal life, interspersed with atmospheric readings of his poetry, merely compounds the issue. It's quite an original exploration of the melancholy interior life of a misunderstood artist, but it never truly coheres.

A disappointment. I have always been picky with films with a historical or biographical undercurrent, and sadly I found this to be very dull and uninsightful.
