A considerable step up compared to the original talkie, Madame X (1929), which included some of the most cringe-worthy acting of the early days of sound. The root of the film starts and ends with Gladys George, who puts on a fine dramatic role as the lady disgraced and stumbling even further in alcohol and misery. Though a lot of the downfall is rushed and doesn't go too much into detail Gladys makes one feel for the once-a-lady in this solid MGM drama.
