Worth watching for the costumes and production design. The casting choices were disappointing though, with Giamatti relegated to a role so minor as to be virtually irrelevant to the story. Bovary's love interests in particular are badly miscast. The accents are very confusing because this is supposed to be France yet people are speaking a whole variety of English dialects, with Bovary sounding like an undergraduate student from the midwest United States. Poor ending.

Another well done but what's the fascination with self-destructive excess, story. She sees herself as a victim, though it's all her doing, and has the gall to complain to anyone who will listen, including the peasants/servants. It's like Massah going down to the slave shacks to whine about how bored he is up in the Big House, cause it ain't the White House. The first half is s-l-o-w.

Moderately interesting but overall unsatisfying and cold. Good acting, strong costumes and set design, but not particularly deep or terribly entertaining.
