I gave this a few days to settle even though I've seen it before. It really is not very good. The memorable gags are very memorable but it's the vaguely memorable tone that made me rewatch it, but ultimately failed to deliver a feature length runtime. The fact that that tone mirrors my existence doesn't bode well for my deathbed rewind.

This movie was obviously meant to be dumb as shit and if you can't realize that then you probably have a brain tumor or are an uptight idiot who has to take everything seriously. A good movie to watch with a bunch of friends but nothing I would ever watch by myself. The sex scenes were pretty hilarious and as a fan of 80's action films I approve of this movie. I expected this to be terrible but it was good for a dumb laugh.

An aggressively stupid satire of an aggressively stupid genre. Not all of the jokes work, but those that do are hilarious enough to make the movie worthwhile. The movie made me laugh more than I care to admit, and since that's all it aspires to do, it is a success. A weak sister of the action-comedy genre, it will make a fine companion to Pineapple Express or Hot Fuzz on a DVD doublebill. The humour is bizarre, and Wiig is great. "Why did Cunth kill your wife?" "To this day I have no idea..."

Don't believe the hype. This is quite possibly one of the worst films ever. The jokes are juvenile and repetitive. The acting is flat and amateurish. Every attempt at parody is a failure. Hahaha, The villain's name is Cunth. Let's say it 100 times. Sorry, still isn't funny.

While I had a few solid laughs I just didn't laugh enough to consider it a good movie. The plot is stupid, but I went in expecting that (which everyone should) and hoping for laughs. Unfortunately, many of the jokes felt like things I've heard or seen before and lost some impact. I think this movie will have some life on DVD, and might be worth a watch while drinking with your buddies if you like stupid comedies.

The absurdism creeps in slowly--a very brief shot of a saxophone solo here (and then never again), an inexplicable backflip there--and then plateaus at a certain point, but not in an uncomfortably over-the-top way. I was laughing throughout, but it wasn't just at the nonsense. MacGruber is a ludicrous character, and the situations in which he finds himself are astoundingly weird. This should definitely be a more popular movie than it is. Also, you'll never look at celery the same way.

Conspiracy theory: a distributor down on its luck picks up a pathetic movie for a song, uses whatever clout it has left to get it into as many theaters as possible, and keeps its employees in for a weekend without pay to flood IMDb with bogus votes. The only reason I went was because it was either this or Shrek, so even though I was set to bail a third of the way through, there was still nothing else to do, so hope against hope. Not to be. It kept getting dumber. Worst movie in 5 years.

Feature length was not good for this legendary SNL skit. That's the magic of SNL and the hardship of the movie industry; Knowing your audience and knowing when enough is enough are two very different qualities in writers and producers. Standard action parody laughs and Will Forte just couldn't hold down being funny in a more drawn out story. It was never necessary, never going to continue the magic because an illusion that fools will never fool us once we know the magic behind it.

A few chuckles is the most that the almost entirely unfunny "MacGruber" can elicit. It summons a lot of action movie cliches to make fun of them, yet its humour is so lacking and the characters so weak that what comes out is an action flick even lamer than its targets. Val Kilmer brings some welcome star power to the proceedings, his uber-cool demeanour the only reason to want to watch this. Seeing Maya Rudolph literally give up during the ghost sex scene tells you all you need to know.

It's a good solid movie, but it could have been better. As absurd as some parts were I thought they played too much of it like a straight action movie and overall it would have actually benefited from being even more absurd. I also thought they could have found someone better than Ryan Phillippe. But overall I liked it. Will Forte and the character of MacGruber are hilarious. Moving on from his dead wife by having sex with her ghost was next level comedy. The 80's vibes were also pitch perfect.

Viewed July 25, 2016. Steadfast in its commitment to the style of 80s action movies that you can't help but be impressed. It stays committed to the same handful of really dumb jokes, always finding new ways to tell them, like a jazz soloist exploring variations on a theme. I love how much of an unlikable prick MacGruber really is. He's all flaws, and Will Forte plays it to the fullest, which is a blast. That the movie isn't actually all that funny is a shame, but I admire what it tried to

Let's be honest, this isn't a film that will appeal to everyone. The majority will likely think it's a cinematic abomination. A notable subset (myself included) will have fun with it's utterly stupid sense of humour while admitting a number of jokes don't really come off. A tiny majority will think it's the greatest film ever. Those people probably don't realise it's a comedy either. Be afraid of those people. Very very afraid.

I've come to the sad and bizarre conclusion that SNL movies being shitty is a universal law. I'm talking gravity-type absolute principle here. There are simply no exceptions, and I'm now convinced there never will be. Everything about MacGruber fits the SNL movie mold to a T. The script is generic, the humor is safe at best and lazy at worst, and the skit-to-feature transition is stretched well beyond its ability. The really sad thing? This is about the best SNL movie so far.

The SNL skits get laughs from combining the grandiose scope of an action movie with the cramped, bare-bones stage of a live late-night comedy show. It's funny because it looks dinky, cheap, and fake. By showing real buildings really exploding, and real throats-or a believable simulacrum thereof--ripped open by real bare hands, MacGruber commits the deeply MacGruber-esque mistake of shooting itself in the foot.

I turned this on at like 3:30am, not being able to sleep. Assumed it would be a dumb, fast paced comedy. It felt like there was one actual joke every 10 minutes or so. And about 25% of those hit. Really not funny. It wasn't good enough to sustain my comatose brain in the middle of the night. I turned it off half way through, watched Parking Wars instead. That was way more funny. I made myself finish it the next day, but that was only so that I could make sure it was as horrible as I thought.

Successful SNL spoofs are about as rare as cholera, so I'm not surprised that 'MacGruber' fails to break the mold. As I'm unfamiliar with the skit from which this is based, I'm sure it provides a decent laugh for five minutes. This hard-R-rated flick stretches things much too far. The jokes become terribly repetitive, and for a spoof film that wants to mock both Rambo and MacGuyver, I found it about 20 years too late in the game for this material to work on any level. Kilmer makes a funny and effective bad guy, and MacGruber's relationship with Lt. Piper is very amusing. But this just isn't a very good movie. Action comedy about the adventures of MacGruber, a comedic take on the 1980s TV character MacGyver. A blood-spattered hit-or-miss 'out there' character comedy of the 'Wayne's World'/'Austin Powers' school, it manages to be nostalgic and profane in equal measures, a movie that's retro and yet retro-fitted to suit the new cutting edge in screen farce.
