I love Pontoppidan's novel, and August's adaptation is faithful, visually accomplished and very well-cast. Smed is great as the eponymous character.

An unusual story about a man who never ever takes the easy path, and who very slowly learns about the virtuous aspect of shame or humility. Have not read the novel (by a Nobel-Prize-winning author), and had no knowledge of the content of the film before viewing (this should always be the goal: e.g., never watch trailers), and found that I really did not know how the narrative was going to unfold.

Suffers from being an hour too long.

Rarely do I find acting this good in Danish movies - Smed and Rosenthal did a really great job. Impressed that I wasn't bored at any time through 3 hours. *Very Good.

Unfortunately, the last part of the movie doesen't hold up when compared to the stellar first.

Entertaining, respectful and a little too harmless. Pontoppidan's novel is more edgy than this. The supporting cast is ace, especially Katrine Greis-Rosenthal.
