You enter the cluttered room, a thick smoky haze obscuring the odd-looking man lying on the couch. He mumbles "I think it was about locking up the power of evil in a pyramid, and then something about the interconnectedness of people with occult powers? On the other hand, there's a legit scene where a wizard jumps around with a cone-shaped felt hat. So how serious should I take this?". You decide the man is beyond help, close the door and turn away from the mini-review.

Well alright. It's about time something by Anger lived up to the hype. There's quite a bit of Crowley-esque mystical silliness in this film, but the expert craftsmanship and delirious artistry overcomes it. A cornucopia of arresting and memorable images, done with inventive editing techniques (such as the repeated vertical wipe cutting from night to day) and Bobby Beausoleil's excellent score. Really bizarre and fascinating work.

I think it would make more sense if I knew more about the 60s occultism that this was born from, but as it stands, it's a really interesting collection of imagery with a strong score supporting.

Weird montage following various rituals set to some fun music. It does build an enticing atmosphere at times, but not for long enough to justify the running time.

Really shines in its rhythm, Anger's talent and sense of time really comes through in its editing.

A patchwork of some interesting images. Plenty of Kenneth Anger occult hocus-pocus of course.

I don't have much to say except that it's an interesting montage of image and sound.

More occultish nonsense from Anger, but set that aspect aside and you've got some strange and fascinating images before you, and pretty cool music to boot.

Nice editing and shots but otherwise didn't do much to keep my interest.

While sometimes it's difficult to grasp what is going on in any of Anger's films, once you know, you can really start to appreciate what he's doing. This was my first and this is my favourite.
