Love on the Ground

in this one, characters weave in and out of love and allegories for love, as the two female leads enter and then escape this mansion of illusion, theatre and romantic entanglements. saw the 170 minute version.

Very interesting, I personally prefer it to Celine and Julie.

Charlotte, Emily, Silvano, Clément, Paul, Virgil, Eléonore and Béatrice are all tricksters in one way or another, which is not of their doing but rather an inevitable outcome of their coming together in a mystical place (the mansion). These are common themes for Rivette, as is the notion that life is a game we play with others, albeit a deadly serious game (as Charlotte and Emily soon learn). We peak some moments here of Rivette doing comedy and it's funny (e.g. the poke at "cheap psychology").

In this movie Rivette finally shows the spectators not only the usual rehearsals but also the final show! By the way, the boyish attire really suits the older Jane Birkin.
