Shaw Brothers produced this Stephen Chow comedy about a wimpy delivery boy who trains in kung fu to impress a pretty girl. There's definitely some funny gags, but a whole bunch of Chow's humor is either lost in translation or is of the "stupid and obnoxious" variety. Sadly, the paltry quality and quantity of the martial arts action fails to make up for the shortfall of laughs. I ended up spending a lot of the run time of this flick just trying to stay awake.

Stephen Chow is so charmingly funny that he absorbs the flaws of any picture and projects them outward as comedic genius. The dubbing is awful and the plot is uninspired, yet I could hardly ask for anything more. It works. Wholesome hilarity.

This film is every bit as funny as Chow's other works and features just as much madness, creativity, stupid jokes and wonderful moments right out of left field. You have to admit though, it's much longer than it needs to be (despite running only 92 minutes) and drags awfully in the middle. If you can put up with the pacing problems, you will find the visual gags and parodies are among the best in the business.

This felt a lot longer than it needed to be. The romantic interest wasn't very developed. The extended runtime made the jokes quite inconsistent. The best parts involved the dim sum restaurant and the martial arts training. Fav scene: the karate master beating up all the other martial artists in his office while Chow eavesdrops outside and changes his mind about leaving the challenge letter.

Viewed August 2, 2021. Chow's rapidfire joke delivery translates visually into a complete disregard for spatial logic or easily digestible rhythms, while his penchant for making light of pop culture references (like the fury over Cantopop idols or, in some of the funniest images I have ever seen in a movie, Garfield) grounds his anarchic humor in the real world in a highly amusing manner.

Neither enough comedy or action to make it a worthwhile action-comedy. If it was funny and the action was dull it would be worth watching, if it was unfunny and the action fun it would be worth it. This is pointless sub Jackie Chan action-comedy
