More goofy, charming nonsense from Alan Rudolph (cue that unmistakable Mark Isham trumpet music and shots bathed in blue neon light with no discernible source). This isn't his best, mostly because Tom Berenger is no Kevin Carradine (or even Kris Kristofferson), but Elizabeth Perkins is great which sort of makes up for it. While Rudolph's particular blend of dreamy, cornball romanticism and stilted, archly precious dialogue is certainly an acquired taste, it works for me.

I am pretty much in love with this even if it's far from flawless. A pulpy b-grade neo-noir with the golden touch of Alan Rudolph. Still fully an 80s movie.

rudolph's comedic but sort-of-serious tone is always appealing to me- i really don't know if his intention was to make a play on self-serious detective films but here's a film that aesthetically mimics those detective films with a funny storyline. sometimes it feels like those stories i made up after watching a film that affected me when i was a child. it's just a joy to watch.

Alan Rudolf has weird energy. This 80s noir stuck in the 50s is a mix between melodramatic mystery and comedy. You have the kings of odd voices (Berenger and Levine) and Anne Archer hitting the capitol A in acting. I laughed, I was confused, and then I laughed some more at Berenger growing for the hundredth time.
