Fine performances from Robinson and Hirsch elevate the movie above its formulaic structure, but it falls way short of Dogtown and Z-Boys, the documentary on the same subject. Ledger is perfect in a role that was just scuzzy enough to convince me he'd make a good Joker -- he's completely unrecognizable in about half of his scenes, looking more like Val Kilmer than himself. There's just not much else to it. It's enjoyable, but you're better off watching the doc.

Emile Hirsch and Heath Ledger really carry this film and it does a good job accurately depicting the sport of skateboarding. It tries to go deeper than that but suffers from a lack of compelling performances aside from Ledger and Hirsch. Solid enough but does not hit that level of greatness you could have had with a little bit darker of an approach to the story .

Interesting ''true-story'', nicely realised period-setting and more heart than usually in these. Kept me engaged and interested. A small delight.

There were some parts of this movie that seemed a bit corny but overall I've always loved this film.

I like this more than it deserves because I'm a skateboarder. But it's not actually that great of a movie. Ledger is amazing, though. Anyway, check out Dogtown and Z-Boys, the documentary version of this movie which is really incredible

An otherwise ordinary bio-pic by Hardwicke is elevated to the stuff of legend by an unexpectedly brilliant performance by Heath Ledger. He's as exceptional - if not more so - than in The Dark Knight. The word "eerie" comes to mind, in fact.

Seemed overlong, some of the child acting was wooden, which is to be expected. Hirsch was infinitley more interesting than the kid playing Peralta.

John Robinson, Heath Leger and especially Emile Hirsch give an excellent performance. Yet some bits didn't convince me. The story should have been rawer, more spontaneous, more true and not that black & white. ... Still an enjoyable movie, with Emile Hirsch at his best, but I think I will be more pleased with the documentary.

Not as great as the documentary (Dogtown and Z-Boys) that inspired it (also written by the doc's writer/director and one of the skateboarding revolutionaries the films are about - Stacy Peralta) but, it's still a cool film with some good performances - particularly from the late Heath Ledger.

I'm not a skater, so I have no care for the history of skateboarding, and I'm not actually sure what was supposed to be appealing about this movie to people who are like me, because it wasn't.

This movie is very true to the original account of the story as far as one could judge by the documentary "Dogtown and Z-Boys". Good cast, well directed, fun to watch! Heath Ledger shines in a supportive role.

Fascinating film, giving a (somewhat sensationalized) account of the rise of modern aerial skating. Great fun to watch, but a truly tragic finish. Best performance by John Robinson (playing Stacy Peralta), and notable performance by Heath Ledger (Skip Engblom)

Kind of self-righteous revisionist history crap. Also that old-school style skateboarding is unbelievably lame.

Skateboarding aficionados will no doubt find the most to like here, as well as those who enjoy slice of life films about the 1970s, but everyone else is perhaps better off sticking strictly to Dogtown and Z-Boys to understand just what makes Peralta's story worthwhile.
