I should've left after the opening credits. They're the best thing in this movie, which is uncreative in its music cues (Ooh, they played "Cocaine" during the scene where he snorts cocaine! And "Money (That's What I Want)" during the scene when he starts getting rich!), & lazy in its characterizations and use of voice-over. The cynical humor is aggravating, a defense shield against the charge that the film really has nothing to say.

Follow a bullet from an assembly line in Russia to the front line in Africa, then follow the man who facilitates, profits and ultimately is enslaved by the trade. Nicolas Cage helps an otherwise slimy character to be sympathetic and possessing a great deal more dimension. The aspects of the film that cover the flashy and often grimy aspects of the arms trade and the constant outmaneuvering of interpol are the high points. The film loses steam in the final act, unable to wrap things up.

Cage's acting is one-dimensional but it works perfectly with the sly narration and the blase persona of Orlav. The supporting cast is fairly weak and there are some pretty eyerolling music choices and cliches, but as elements that function to elevate Orlav's character they're complimentary. Orlav's indifference to morality makes him a fascinating character, and the ending where he ultimately achieves a pyrrhic victory is one I'd love to see more of in storytelling.

Rock solid performances by Cage and Leto power a fascinating and thorough exploration of the gun running trade; an overall familiar dramatic arc (which has everything but Cage screaming "Say hello to my little friend") is redeemed by the specificity of the performances, and some nifty fly-on-the-wall directorial tricks from Niccol, prefiguring the BIG SHORT trend of smart arsey commentary on tricky real-world politics.

A great movie that came out in that weird time in Nicolas Cage's career where the only movies people seemed to see or even talk about were the "bad" ones or National Treasure. Why must people ignore this, The Weather Man, Knowing, and Adaptation and only talk about "NOT THE BEES!" I still love you Nic.

Nicolas Cage definitely has his acting limitations but as a narrator for his own life as an international arms dealer he is in his element. Lavishly and stylistically shot but with a large hit of reality Lord of War is both depressing and darkly comic. A very intelligent take on a topic rarely touched by film, based on fact but never shy on entertainment.

Ehhh. The premise and Cage make it seem it should be great, but it's too flawed to be anything but above average. Most of the attempted emotional engagement doesn't hit the target, it just screams CHARACTER ARC. Did you really care about his wife or his brother? Secondly the plot comes off as generic, "greatest hits of the Cold War with accompanying obvious soundtrack", complete with a finger-wagging conclusion at the superpowers. And the biggest problem? Cage wasn't crazy enough.

Nicolas Cage is great and Leto is pretty good despite being utterly typecast. There's a really slick feel over the movie but the tone is uneven as fuck and the pace is about as uneven. Overall though it's well worth a watch because there's a lot of great scenes and Cage is worth it.

This isn't a great movie, but it's exactly what I wanted to watch at the moment: something polished and entertaining that doesn't ask you to think too much. Oh, there were some bits that made me roll my eyes: the informative, ironic and completely predictable on-screen text just before the ending credits roll, "Cocaine" playing over a cocaine scene (there ought to be a law), wholly gratuitous T&A. But still, it held my attention, had a few funny lines, and never really irritated me.

Cage shows that despite some really bad career choices he can, in fact, still act when given something to work with. A superb film that isn't afraid to criticize the gun trade and the shadowy dealings of international politics. It's also a really fun action film as well, so it works on a superficial level as well.

Andrew Niccol's best directorial work as of 2019 (which speaks volumes), and one of Cage's best performances (second only maybe to Leaving Las Vegas). Don't be off-put by some of the genres given to this film. The film is in a genre of itself. It's a tad formulaic in its progression, and Jared Leto probably wasn't the best choice, but that's the only criticism I have for it. This film is phenomenal.

What I like about Lord of War is that it doesn't pull any punches when looking at the real villain of the story. Sure Yuri and other arms traders like him are criminals and should be dealt with, but the real bogeyman is the American government that supplies weapons all over the world. Many times to the same groups they want to fight later. Lord of War is an important movie from this vantage point. Although it could have been done better, the result is still a striking look at illegal arms trade.

Alternates between being slick and fun, and stupid and contrived. Both Cage's performance and the dialogue fluctuate from okay to comically bad. Also contains the worst one sided expository movie phone call I've seen in a long time. "What? they're coming here? They're on there way now, what does that mean? How long do I have? I only have twenty minutes, what does that mean? What are they going to do when they get here? They're going to arrest me, what does that mean?"

Cage, first problem. Second, the voice over by Nicholas Cage. Third, if the story of a arms dealer could be interesting, here it isn't because trivial/cliché-ridden characters, plot and dialogues at the same level of a Stallone's '80s movie. The "message" of the movie is prosy too. Niccol, maybe you are better in sci-fi than in geopolitic, but from this movie we learn very few things on illegal weapon-market, even if the film seems a documentary, the characters are only stylized. Is not enough.

Lord of War is a funny, smart movie about arms trafficking, while also being a deep character study on its lead trafficker played well by Nicolas Cage. It's nothing more than that, and a greater emphasis on everything going around Cage's character and his profession would have been nice, but for what it is, Lord of War works. It's not exactly a fun watch, save for the sprinkles of black comedy scattered throughout, but it raises awareness and gives you an interesting viewing experience.

I love the undertones and suggested themes of this movie and Orlovs emotional journey through his arms-dealing career but, as with all Niccol movies, it is let down by stiff dialogue. Luckily, that is the only real blemish on an otherwise very intriguing film. Nic Cage is stellar throughout and Jared Leto does his best junkie impersonation, so on the acting part itself you cannot fault anyone. It pains me greatly that Niccol just can't seem to fulfill his role as a great director/writer, though.
