Awesome 70s 'New York-as-hell' flick about a prim school-teacher's thirst for annihilation. Its been labeled by critics as a conservative morality tale against promiscuity but the actual film isn't really political, its more a character study of a self-destructive person, constantly looking for increasingly dangerous and reckless thrills to enliven her mundane life. Not gonna lie, I could relate.

Disappointed after wanting to see this for years. Some cool technique and good individual scenes, but the story was a mess. That has to be one of the worst possible ways to end a film.

Nothing like a film that totally dates itself when a laughing Keaton scornfully holds aloft a condom that buddy wanted to use on her. Wow that scary, nasty ending I did NOT expect. The final images of the film - her dieing, strobe-lit face - could be one of the most disturbing film endings I think I've ever seen.

A persons quest to find the breaking points of their own soul. Post Vietnam America having to truly reckon with what it has done to the world and how it’s citizens react to it. When there’s no morality where to turn. All boredom. All the illusions of the hippie dream. Sexual revolution for who? Keaton doing this the same year as Annie Hall examining all the fucked up degeneracy in 70’s men.

I remember watching this in the theater and feeling almost physically ill about what I had seen. It was very affecting. I should probably watch it again to see if it holds up at all.

I don't think it's as dynamic as it wants to be. It describes a gradual descent, but feels like it's in a rut for a while until finally an implacable sense of tension or dread begins to mount. You don't know what looms, but you know it's bad, and I find the finale inspired. As a character study (rather than a morality tale) I think there's a lot of truth to the story.

Grim and clinical, with a powerful nasty ending.

I'm not sure if knowing the ending hurt or helped my viewing since I can easily picture myself thinking "What's the point of all this?" and turning it off. However, it is interesting simply because this was made before Woke & PC took over & H'wood woudn't go near this story now even though its theme that All Suffering and Neuroses Are the Result of Patriarchal Society is overtly feminist. It's even sympathetic to gays, but not in the Liberal Orthodoxy way where they never do anything truly awful
