Terri Welles is, indeed, a looker and it's too bad she's not the female lead. The first half of the film is enticingly mysterious but Crichton kind of pisses it all away.

That's not to say that the film can't be enjoyed as good cheese, however -- there are some amusingly inept moments (watch for the car "crashing" into the fountain), and the few special effects are decent enough. Overall, Looker is probably more interesting as a historical piece than as a thriller -- though it's dated badly on a number of levels, the ideas of dehumanization and artifice that it puts forth were, for 1981, surprisingly forward-thinking.

Some good ideas. But a plot hole as huge as can be, it never explains why the models get killed.

A too deeply submerged mystery movie. It's evident immediately that something funny is going on, but it takes exasperatingly long to find out just what. Mind-control through TV commercials turns out to be Crichton's primary bone to pick -- a well-picked bone, of course, long before he gets hold of it. Even his most original concept -- some sort of flashlight gun that hypnotizes and paralyzes -- comes to seem old and worn-out by the time he is through playing with it.

If you want to see a really dated 80's movie, here's my pick

Combining ideas way ahead of its time (CGI and deep fakes in 1981) with scantily clad models and massive plot holes. A fun popcorn movie if you switch your brain off and soak it in. Michael Boddicker's minimal sequencer score is noteworthy and credited only as "music department" on IMDB.

Anticipates AI frenzy in decades by creating a conspiracy around big billion-dollar corp running scientific commercials with computer-generated actors -- mostly already beautiful young actress trying to make it in LA -- and a new flashing light tech to hypnotize viewers and make them buy this or that, vote for that senator. Songs are a blast, Finney delivers and what about that crazy climax -- dudes firing virtual and real guns while ads are being made live with AI and real settings.

For a sci-fi action, this is kind of in a class by itself. Very unique plot, and it was quite entertaining overall.

There's a kernel of a good idea in this movie, but it's execution is ridiculously sloppy. The plot is so rife with holes that it actually forgets to provide any reason for the murders. Probably realizing that "extremely effective commercials" is hardly the biggest threat, Crichton throws in the idea that they are also putting hypnotic suggestions in the commercials, but he doesn't bother to explain what their goal is.

Neat characters and premise but the movie never really went anywhere. It could have been a decent thriller, mystery, horror...instead they defaulted to bland action. Fav scene: ridiculous car chase scene in which Finney keeps covering his eyes in reaction to getting shot at, even though earlier in the movie we're shown that it's too quick to react to.
