A beautiful portrait of just a bleak miserable person and how that twists all of his relationships

An admirable, yet flawed and very general of the early kitchen-sink British flicks, though this one negates any social commentary it's going for by clogging itself with a predictable romance story, heralded by our "protagonist" whose seems too oafish for us to empathise with him as much as the film wants us to. On the plus side, it has its moments of stark realism (scenes with Jimmy's mother) and is occasionally (unintentionally) humorous.

One of the first British 'angry young man' dramas is effectively powerful and raw, though often stagey - Burton, at times clearly channeling Brando, is effective when spitting and shouting, however this doesn't always translate well to the screen, occasionally coming off as overplayed. Bloom and Ure are effective as the women in his life, and the supporting cast is peppered with fine character actors, (with Pleasence oozing slime in his few brief appearances).

If you're watching this film and finding that it doesn't really interest you, then just focus entirely on Burton's magnificent performance and you'll be fine.

If there was a list of "movies that make me never want to get married," this would be at the top. The entire film is fairly depressing, frightening, bleak, emotionally true, and well acted, but then they attempt to throw a positive spin into the final scene, which I didn't buy at all.

Richard Burton's performance is the centerpiece of the film. His character doesn't completely work, but he's interesting and fun to watch.

Very well acted, but here's the thing: I have only very sketchy ideas of why Jimmy is so damn miserable. Maybe it's because I'm an American, or because I wasn't born until 1968, but it doesn't translate well for me. Still, getting past the reasons, it's a good view of a miserable bastard making someone else's life hell just so he won't be the only one.

One of the key films in the early 60's british Kitchen Sink movement.
