The very best scenes are when he’s fighting while holding the baby and there is almost no regard given to trying to hide that the child is just a doll that was until I saw the kid was played by about thirty different children who all mysteriously died.

From the first installment, it's easy to see why this series could justify four installments in a single year. It's a tremendously watchable exploitation flick and for the era, that amount of artery spurting is unheard of. I was gleefully waiting for every next instance of blood rain, and never had to wait too long. Blood rain is my favorite kind of blood...and rain.

As a relative novice to samurai films, I found this initial entry into the acclaimed series to be quite a trip. The title character is both reluctant and imperfect in a way that is often hard to find in film. The blood is plentiful and the violence is sometimes disturbing. On top of all this, the cinematography is so engaging with its crash zooms and artful interludes.

The exploitation is ridiculous (and pretty tame), action/style is enjoyable (also ranging on ridiculous), story and characters are filler. I have a strong feeling that just described the entire series.

My first Chambara film, and I have some mixed feelings. Sometimes the story is difficult to follow because of the constant name-dropping and frequent flashbacks. There were also a couple of subplots that were not satisfactorily fleshed out or resolved. I know this is the first of a series, but the ending was a little flat. On the other hand, this film has a unique and exciting aesthetic and great fight choreography. I'll admit that the gallons of blood and darker themes won me over. Recommended.

ADORO. Box Versátil.

The first film in the six film series that adapts the popular manga. The shogun's executioner is betrayed and framed for death by the leader of a rival clan and he hits the road with his only surviving family member ... his infant son ... seeking vengeance. In the first film, he accepts a contract to kill three samurai who are hiding out at a spa with a gang of unsavory thugs. These are immensely stylish and immensely brutal films and I love them.

Based on a popular manga, this was the start of a samurai action-hero franchise marked by very colorful set pieces, cheesy villainry and over-the-top violence. And while that isn't always my cup of tea (such as when smug postmodernist Americans do it decades later), there's a certain integrity and an unassuming simplicity about the early Lone Wolf and Cub movies that keeps them charming.

Just look at the poster: a badass asian guy holding an infant, that's right, we're entering "Hard-Boiled" territory in terms of action-packed scenes full of ridiculousness and anime-like exageration. Unfortunately the dialogue-heavy scenes were dragging this otherwise perfect action flick.

A lot of the action is packed into a few short sequences. I was sometimes annoyed by the weird Japanese cultural aspects. Most of the fights are over far too quickly, and it contains a fair amount of gore and blood. Several unnecessary scenes were added simply for the shock value. Some of the acting was a bit over the top. Overall, it is a satisfying story about a highly skilled samurai forced into a life of crime and demonstrates a certain sense of poetic justice.

Ridiculous, but it never overstays its welcome and the camp value is tremendous. Ogami has a busy revenge schedule.

Although the later installments follow the tried-and-true, the first three films show a formal uniqueness and visual audacity that's tough to beat. Yagyū Retsudō's intro through an off-camera frame-pulse is amazing.

For those who like their samurai bloody and brooding, it doesn't get much better than Lone Wolf and Cub. Can't help but feel like the mere episode in a series it is but still very satisfying on its own.

Sometimes it's cheesy but that doesn't really matter to me. The action is great with its buckets of blood. I could say that maybe the story could use a little bit of tightening up because it's a tad confusing but it seems silly to say that when the movie is just so much fun. I don't really go into this genre or any revenge movie for an amazing story. This has a bunch going on in it but ultimately it just has to lead to action to satisfy. And it does.

Stylized violence, rogue assassin ronin, child prodigy?? foundation film, Ogami Itto. You won't find a sex scene edited so uniquely. Is he shameless or did he know that ghosts were watching him?

The standard chambara elements: heaps of violence, complicated backstory and confusing web of characters, sleazy exploitation, hero overcoming ridiculous odds. But it comes with a twist: the protagonist travels with his infant son. The "cub" is employed in some interesting ways. It's pretty inventive at times, and the camerawork is often quite stunning and there several clever bits of business. Some of it is pretty cheesy, but mostly it's a fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously.

It's kinda cool how quickly the 90 minute film goes by and how much better this is than Kill Bill :3. But many of the filler scenes were lacking and the random sex scene is just...pointless. Cute kid and good intro to a good series though.

Tomisaburo Wakayama plays Ogami Itto, assassin for hire who is also being pursued by the evil Yagyu clan. With the help of his young son and his tricked out, weapons-laden baby cart, Itto destroys his enemies, usually in a geyser of blood. A wonderful series of six bloody chanbara films.
