Fat single Dad Kevin James pushing his son around in a stroller which is tricked out with hidden gadgets such as a fork. For this ridiculous sequel they went insane with the red paint budget.

Probably my favorite of the series. This works stylistically and viscerally in innovative - and entertaining - ways that do not distract from the bloodletting. It's also extremely internal and intimate, as these films go: check out the campfire scene of hunting, haunting noises that ends with... nothing really, which is a special thing indeed. The film's climax fills the vacuum, which is just as great.

The makers learnt from the previous film: less dialogue. It actually feels like a silent picture at times, and that's great! Even more ridiculous scenes and more gore. This is how you make a sequel!

More gleeful bloodletting and gratuitous titties. Without needing as much background, Misumi is able to provide more action, and he makes it more spectacular. This time around we've got a troupe of deadly female assassins and three vicious brothers equipped with fun toys. The baby gets more moments to shine, too. Doesn't seem quite as off-kilter as the first one, but packs a little more punch.

Tomisaburo Wakayama plays Ogami Itto, assassin for hire who is also being pursued by the evil Yagyu clan. With the help of his young son and his tricked out, weapons-laden baby cart, Itto destroys his enemies, usually in a geyser of blood. A wonderful series of six bloody chanbara films.

Light on plot, heavy on pure badass energy and enough bright red blood to fill several swimming pools. There is no downtime, and every scene is either impossibly cool or completely insane, or both. The editing gets downright experimental at points and the soundtrack goes so fucking hard, especially that last track. The violence is excessive and extremely creative, finding new ways to chop up bodies in new ways every couple of minutes

So outdoes the first entry in the series in every aspect imaginable that I can hardly believe they were made by the same people and released in the same year.

Not quite as pretty as Sword of Vengeance but with plenty to love. Cub nurses Itto back to life after a savage radish ambush.

This one is a little more convoluted and hard to follow than the first one, which might not be a complete damnation for an action film, but it's also slower. For a series that chiefly relies on sword fights and gallons of blood, slow is probably not how you want someone to describe your movie. Still, it's decent, even fun, and I'll continue the series. Points for the baby carriage littered with hidden blades.

This second entry in the "Lone Wolf and Cub" series starts with a sword being embedded in a man's forehead ... and that's a pretty good indicator of the tone of the film. It's a quieter and more methodical film than the first one, but it also ratchets up the violence.

Many years before, I had watched the edited and dubbed American version of this, "Shogun Assassin", and gave it a very low score. I may have loosened up as a viewer, or gotten nostalgic, or it's somehow drastically more palatable in its original and undubbed cut.

The first one got the choppy-choppy right but also had a lot of ground to cover, and it became frequently tedious with the swords sheathed. Unburdened from that exposition, the sequel makes it easier to appreciate the bizarre and extremely bloody world of the Lone Wolf and his Cub. It's insane - James Bond would be jealous of that baby cart - but stylish and endlessly entertaining.

If you've seen Sword of Vengeance, then you already know what to expect: one-dimensional characters, a derivative storyline, and some unnecessary female nudity. But you can also expect some excellent Chambara action and explosive geysers of blood. Entertaining, but suffers from the problems of the original.
