I come waltzing out in my boxer briefs while all the samurai laugh at me as they wear bedsheets wedged high up their asses. A tad too much rape in this one.

It's exploitation (women in many old Japanese movies only exist to be raped), the fights are silly, and the episodic plot stops making sense at some point. It's still not completely charmless, but the third chapter sees the Lone Wolf and Cub saga beginning to get old.

I found this one to be a bit less fun (and a bit more rape-y) than its predecessors. The movie spends a lot of time mulling over all those old samurai notions of honor, which is fine, but it's done in a billion other movies. It doesn't really get cooking until the third act. But I do like the sense of escalation in this series. Diagoro takes on a greater role, the odds become crazier, and Ogami's arsenal gets bigger (at this point, the "baby cart" is more of a baby tank).

I'm going to prematurely call Baby Cart to Hades the best film in this series. While the first two entries play like parts in a serial, this is a fully-realized work directed with creativity and confidence by Misumi. The script is also better. Itto is a sympathetic, three-dimensional character now, not just an asshole with a sword who kills shit in order to inflate the body count. It's still a bloodbath, but it has a sense of purpose that's missing from parts one and two. Recommended.

Tomisaburo Wakayama plays Ogami Itto, assassin for hire who is also being pursued by the evil Yagyu clan. With the help of his young son and his tricked out, weapons-laden baby cart, Itto destroys his enemies, usually in a geyser of blood. A wonderful series of six bloody chanbara films.

For a series with four installments in a single year, "Lone Wolf and Cub" came out of the gate surprisingly strong, and maintained a momentum that very few series can muster. This one is a little more atmospheric than the previous, but I haven't seen a single installment yet that is anything less than a hell of a ride.

I got a bit of stylistic whiplash watching Baby Cart to Hades in such close proximity to Baby Cart at the River Styx. They 100% feel like movies made by two different directors, not the same director in the same year no less. There is still a lot to love in this one and plenty of badass scenes but I missed how batshit insane the previous one was. The story is far more conventional and so is the editing. It's a more refined vision/presentation but a little bit of the personality was lost.

Has a few distinctions in the series in that it has probably the strongest cast, the best cinematography and oh, is the rapiest. The general mood moves away from the oh so magical trashiness of the first two (with a few noteworthy exceptions) towards something more somber and serious, but seriously, that’s not what the audience came for. Also, seriously, a lot of gratuitous sexual violence.

Despite being convoluted, it's a simple story without too much plot. Tomisaburo Wakayama plays overweight, constantly scowling Ronin Ogami Itt? with his son Daigor? who has the world's greatest baby carriage -- guns, swords, shields and it floats! Perhaps you are wondering why anyone would ever want to watch something like the Lone Wolf and Cub series; well, it's got good swordplay, over the top action that puts modern superhero movies to shame, and comical amounts of rape and gore.

Ogami Itto defends a young woman who has murdered the man that was going to sell her into prostitution. He agrees to be subjected to an elaborate torture to rescue her from her fate, and then agrees to assassinate a local governor in exchange for her freedom. An oddly episodic entry in this series that features all the best elements, but has a bit of trouble arranging them in a compelling plot.

Lots of varied violence, lots of blood spatters, a confusing bordering on nonsensical plot. About par for the course for the series. Plenty of high points, and the concept remains compelling, but it doesn't really come together.

A few decent fight scenes. But there is a little too much Japanese warrior code nonsense. The gun battle was ridiculous. The sword fighting and posturing was interesting. The finale at the end was far too similar to a previous episode, I guess the writers got lazy. Lots of blood gushing, severed limbs and heads, and a trio of bandit rapists to punch up the ratings. Worth watching but not one of the best in the series.

Most of the running time is a bit aimless and lacks much action - which is strange for this series - but the finale is so well done it pushes my grade way up.

A body count of about a bazillion but with a well rounded story and better characterisation than the first two make this the best Lone Wolf and Cub yet. Plus it features a watermelon with a hat on which means it that it is clearly inspiration for Hausu (although it doesn't cackle!)

Good samurai film somewhat spoiled by a silly machine gun pram scene.
