L'oeil du malin

I was a bit put off by the v/o narration at first, a "tell not show" approach that's usually wrong, but past a certain point, Chabrol just does a brilliant job portraying an anti-hero's folly, leading up to a fitting and satisfying theatrical sort of ending.
