A slightly more light-hearted version of the "Shine" story.

Not bad film made quite good by the vocal talents of Jane Horrocks.

Very sweet little film that isn't really a film. And Micheal Caine is actually bothered so its not all bad.

Nice little movie. Jane Horrocks does a fine job with all the voices, and Michael Caine is good as a complete bastard

Really enjoyed this on a recent rewatch after not seeing it for many years. i was suprised at how funny it was, with many characters reminding me of real life persons from my own life. Horrocks, Blethyn and Caine are all supurb.

Jane is a wonder and Michael Caine is a pleasure as always. Only the trite romance with Ewen McGregor holds this one back.

I loved this movie, if only for the music, the first time I saw it at age 11. Since then, it's remained a favourite. Its based on a play but works just as well as a film with fantastic, theatrical performances from Michael Caine, Brenda Blethyn and Jane Horrocks (who also perfroms all the songs). Fantastic music, very funny and ultimatley very moving.

Broadbent and Caine were great together - but I think the rest of the cast was not up to the job and the script risked being innovative but did not pull it off.

Whilst JH puts in a fine singing performance and MC is on top form, pretty much everything else is a bit naff and twee. Why is it that British film makers can never celebrate the good aspects of Britain .. no, we have to have hard gritty "Northern" stuff where everyone is thoroughly working class, a bit simple and has no aspirations other than going to the pub (Full Monty, Billy Elliot, Little Voice, Tyrannosaur, Kes and countless others). Celebrating our naffness has become a bit tiresome!

Rather sweet, but almost everyone in it is so... extreme. Brenda Blethyn blathers CONSTANTLY--and loudly...one longs to stuff something in her mouth. No wonder Jane Horrocks barely talks--it's too much effort to get a word in. The scenes with Ewan McGregor are such a relief...he's the only normal, sympathetic person in the flick (and he's absolutely beautiful). Michael Caine does a good job with a stupid character, and is an infinitely more engaging singer/performer than Horrocks.

Yeah ... I don't know. I get that Jane Horrocks has an impressive set of pipes, but I wish they had constructed a compelling story around it. I think everyone in this film turns in good performances (although I find Brenda Blethyn immensely irritating here, that's clearly the point, so I don't hold it against her), I find the story to be so underwhelming that I'm not sure if there's any whelm at all.
