When a childless couple learn that they cannot have children, it causes great distress. To ease his wife's pain, the man finds a stump in the backyard and chops it and varnishes it into the shape of a child. However the woman takes the root as her baby and starts to pretend that it is real. When the root takes life they seem to have gained a child; but its appetite is much greater than that of a normal child. (imdb)

Three words: Cannibalistic log baby. Hard to go wrong with that.

All these tight shots really started grating on my nerves as it delivers in some scenes but outlives its purpose. It’s about the only complaint I have but it's such a consistent one. It's imaginative for the first half and I always have fun with this mix of light/dark elements of a fairy tale with this specific humor. I should probably rewatch this as this was my introduction to Jan Svankmajer (thanks again early Netflix instant watch days).

As unbearable as it is brilliant.

I still think Svankmajer is best suited for short films, which highlight his eccentricities without dragging them out to the point of boredom.

shame that from one point it just transposed (and finished) the tale, instead of studying the family - how they deal with the social pressure to have a child, or the denial of the mother about the monstrosity of her child and etc. Herbert the pervert was interesting touch

Great small scenes not related to main plot (ads in TV, carp-like babies, etc.) Unfortunately, main plot too dull and long.Of course, movie is surreal, like others made by Jan :)

DVDRip no MakingOff.

You know, just your everyday story of a mother's love for her monstrous tree stump baby, no big deal. Renowned Czech stop-motion animator Jan Svankmajer brings his trademark weirdness to this odd little whatsit, complete with his usual gross close-ups of mouths and disgusting looking food (and baby penises, so many baby penises). I find that a little of his shtick goes a long way, and I'd be lying if two hours of this stuff didn't get sort of tiring after a while.

The only aspect that didn't work for me was the complete, inhuman, unbelievable derangement of the wife character. All of her behaviour felt like plot-advancement rather than believable human behaviour, so that rubbed me the wrong way. Otherwise, loved it.

I love Švankmajer, but he's best when using stop-motion.

This isn't the best movie, but you should still see it. You will always think, 'Yeah, I saw Little Otik.'

The first half is awesome (85/100) the second half keeps dragging on and on and on (6/100). So I averaged it to 70/100.

Fabulous horror/fantasy. Svankmajer's animation and the live action mix perfectly

A strange and unusual horror movie from Svankmajer, Little Otik will appeal to fans of the macabre. My problem with it is that it tends to exagerate elements of the tale instead of developing or building on them, and it also suffers from irritating photographic mannerisms such as many uncalled-for, painfully extreme closeups.
