Mesmerising, funny, disturbing, entertaining and hypnotic; all at the same time.

"that that that plant is making [so-and-so] act different!" again and again for 90 minutes.

Such a strange film in so many ways. Hausner contrasts bright colors against the sterile environment of the corporate greenhouse. The film strikes me as a parable about the dangers of groupthink and the ways we root out our differences from one another through science. I found the final act to be both chilling, but in a strangely comic way that serves to underline our misplaced contentment with the way things are in the modern, scientific world.

Cannes 2019 disappointment.

Not a movie that sucks up to the audience, especially that tinnitus score, but Hausner creates such a well-designed, framed take on Invasion of the Body Snatchers (or IS it?), where everything is always in its place and nothing doesn't have a pat solution even before the evil plants (or ARE they?) show up, that I'm honestly not sure what film I watched. That's probably a very good sign.

I kinda like the eerie, not-horror, but evidently pretty weird vibe of a sci-fi about a plant that is engineered to make people -- and corporate people -- happy. Too bad the execution is not as engaging as its concept -- dramatically inert, of course, but also wastes a lot of its deadpan comedy, Body Snatchers-esque potential in favor of a mere creation-turning-against-creator trope. But hey, I love The Happening.

Slow meditation on a range of interesting themes: GM crops, antidepressants, mass delusion, adolescence and parenting. Dialogue often sounds like it's been quite clumsily translated into English. It is often beautifully shot, though even some of these choices become a little clunky (the repeated appearance of red amongst the otherwise muted, pastel palette).

Little Joe is tedious affair with a grating soundtrack that almost seems precise in its air of alienation. The film is well made in terms of cinematography, bathing scenes in bold colour tints. The acting is decent, though the characters aren't that interesting. The film is also a tad slow in pacing. Nevertheless, the film is a scourge on the senses that seem to distract attention away from the mediocre plot. Needless to say, I didn't enjoy this one.

A loose remake of the 1967 Star Trek episode This Side of Paradise. And the plant life in that episode don't come off any better than they do here.

Delightfully demented, drolly British spin on BODY SNATCHERS is masterfully constructed by Hausner, and played beautifully by its cast; Fox is particularly good as a tightly wound neurotic, but everyone is game to play, especially an icy Beecham, and an unsettling Connor. Eerie tracking shots (which arguably don't pay off in of themselves) still keep the viewer off-balance.

hausner's anaesthetised cynicomic tone and compositional rigor are always a pleasure and this is by no means a dealbreaker, but it unfortunately reminds me of another recent zombie movie by a celebrated deadpan auteur, and fails (albeit far less seismically) for similar reasons: it assumes the worst of people at the outset and snidely rubs our noses in it with a combo of condescending exposition and lazy irony (although there are a handful of jokes worthy of lanthimos—NERD thumbsdownemoji).

Mutluyum mutlusun mutlu
