I really want to love this six hour adaptation of Dickens's novel. It has an expansive and impressive cast, and was clearly a labour of love. It has an intriguingly shabby and grimy look to it. It feels like the time period probably looked a lot more like this film than your average prestige, literary production. Sadly, I can't say I love this. Sarah Pickering, who plays the title character, had no prior film acting experience, and it shows.

The rating is based on my memory of seeing this film in its two parts in the theatre when it was released. The faithful adaptation and unrelenting drabness was very impressive at the time.

Lovingly made by a large team, economically and authentically re-creating Dickens's London, with a starry cast giving their all. Adored by audiences who could take the length.

Pros: authentic imagining of Dickens' themes & strong acting [Guinness comes up short in comparison, not his best] ——- Cons: cinematography that even by tv production standards is a bit too confined, a strong pace that collapses in the 2nd half. ——- Both sections have questionable endings that I can't decide on
