Guys, call me crazy, but I think Diablo Cody and Zelda Williams might be Tim Burton fans.

I'm not here for the monsters. I was her for Liza Soberano. Having seen her for a decade in Filipino films and teleseryes, I was curious how she'd transition to American film. She does quite well. Easily the most entertaining of the supporting cast. The main story was hit and miss. Sometimes it was just too corny for its own good, but sometimes it did find its sweet morbid spot.

Strikes me very much as a divisive movie - not because it's particularly challenging, but because I don't predict much middle-ground reaction-wise; you are either on-board with this premise and how goofy its execution is, or, you aren't (and you're probably gonna hate this as a result). I am on board! It's silly and it's trying to be, which is at least a moderate success, plus it achieves and maintains a fun tone even with murder, decapitation, and eventual corpse husbandry (literally). See it!

Silly/absurdist comedy hits everyone differently - even more so than general comedies where the humor is deliberate rather than a tangential offshoot of a Let's Be Goofy attitude. This film is astonishingly silly in its tone & so I'm going to assume something this extreme will have people who love it. But you'd have to find the silliness funny & I absolutely did not. Lots of great 80's tunes, good performances, but unwatchable to me. FF'd it. Very reminiscent of Edward Scissorhands, but worse.

Dark comedy, not horror. Spooky, not scary. Honestly it’s an 80s halloween romcom. I loved it. If you liked Death Becomes Her, this movie lands in a similar sphere.

I enjoyed it as some silly fun. Some of the little spiky asides are really good and I liked the two leads.

Another Cody movie that’s going to be very annoying for some people and its fans will be the most annoying about it (see Jennifer’s body) but it is a fun gothic pastiche. Name dropping Pabst as your fav director had me locked into the movie’s wavelength. I feel like if the concept of midnight movie still existed this would be ripe for discovery in like 15 years time

Well, I hated it. Terrible all around. Carla Gugino was the only good part.

Delightfully macabre. The performances elevate this to exactly where it needs to be. No part of this is shoddy, mind you, but I was severely impressed by Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Carla Gugino and Liza Soberano. From Newton I somewhat expected it, Sprouse I just haven't seen in much, Gugino I have never seen this good, and Soberano I didn't even know. Any actor, no matter the caliber can be proud to deliver any of these performances. Damn.

I sort of have mixed feelings about the film’s treatment of Lisa and Taffy in the last act, as well as its treatment of grief and death. But nothing that broke the movie for me. I had a blast. The leads were both very good, the kills (wasn’t expecting any actually) were surprisingly gruesome, the cinematography is pretty, and the 80s aesthetic looked very sharp and distinct. By no means a perfect movie, but it’s probably some of the most fun I’ve had this year. Campy, touching and just so fun!

This is an entertaining film. The script has some good original movements plus it pays homage to other works. The cast does a good job with the material. Overall I would recommend this film.

Falls ever so slightly on the wrong side of annoying for me. It used to be called the Tim Burton line but maybe it needs to be renamed the Diablo Cody.

It had many flaws but I didn't hate it. Some themes I might have wanted to see treated differently or expended on. Some of the revenge seem to have limited the movie to consequences before the story could explore other areas, and while one could go, well it's the tragedy of it, I feel like it wastes the set up a bit. Like building a sandcastle and not even taking a minute to step back and look at it before destroying it. Felt bad for some of the side characters

Obviously owes a debt to Heathers but is that a bad thing? Maybe there's an alternate timeline where dozens of movies aim for that feel; would that be a worse timeline? Either way, it stands on its own. Campy fun, throw it in the rotation at Halloween. Curious how modern teens receive it versus the gen ex/millennial audience it feels aimed at.

Kinda cute, but mostly hit or miss in its depiction of an 80s girl who's seen her mom get murdered by a serial killer and becomes unpopular high-school teen, now finding a new way to live and discovering her sexuality while teaming up with a Victorian dude brought to life by a storm, turning into her protector while slaughtering people who bullied her and taking some of their body parts for himself -- dick scene is amazing. Could've been 20min shorter and maybe filled with more gore and music.

Jennifer’s Body meets Edward Scissorhands. A few cute or amusing moments but not quite my thing. The PG13 rating kinda hurt this one, it feels like it’s dancing around the movie it wants to be in terms of violence, language AND sexuality (the sin trifecta). Kathryn Newton has been going to high school in movies and TV shows for over a decade now. KATHRYN NEWTON PLAY A CHARACTER WHO IS AN ADULT LIKE YOU ARE CHALLENGE (Impossible)

Target demo will be for those younger than us, but this had its moments. Some asinine, some well executed. On the whole it felt a bit more cringe than not, but I appreciate the intent and it looked like everyone involved had fun making it. The 80s style is what drew us to this one, and the sets, music, and colour palates used were fun. 5.9

Mildly entertaining but somewhat tonally confused and has mixed success trying to accomplish what it's trying to do. A lot of times it seems like it's trying too hard to be campy or fun and it doesn't quite hit the right tone, but there's some okay stuff. Really liked Soberano in this.

Zelda's directing chops make her worth paying attention to, going forward, and I've never hated Cody's writing. It just feels like Cody's a little tamed here. There are moments where what made her interesting (and divisive, in some sense) shines through, but it's too few and far between to make this great. Newton also put in a worthwhile performance, even if it will be forgotten by time. Didn't really laugh and the romance wasn't effective, but its silliness was relatively fun.
