Some are calling this melancholy, but I think bittersweet is a better word. Above all, it's a story about a 12 year-old music prodigy being played by a c. 12 year-old acting prodigy. What's the significance of 12? It's that age where you're as mature as you're going to get before the onset of puberty. Wow. I'm in awe. This film gave me such a great peaceful sense of comfort, and I never wanted it to end. It can be difficult to write about a work of art that speaks for itself so perfectly. Other than that mentioning that both characters are perfectly written, played and relatable, it will take me a few viewings to be able to articulate just how special this film is to me. Whaley has created a masterpiece of cinema both as a writer and director. Ed Harcourt's score is just as magnificent.

Sometimes, a single character is enough to ruin a movie. In this case, the child prodigy did that for me. I struggle to enjoy lots of movies that feature child actors in prominent roles, and this one does that and also has him characterized as someone who is "smarter and better than you." Annoying and frustrating. Some of the movie is beautiful, and the acting is good, but I couldn't get beyond that child.
